Year 13 Edexcel Maths Suggested Long Term Plan

(0)
This is the year-long pattern of lessons I have devised to finish the new linear maths course with Edexcel. This assumes that you are delivering 5 lessons per week in a two week cycle using two staff, dividing the course equally. The plans include time for review lessons and an assessment in school at the end of the 10 week module. Feedback would be welcomed.

Revision End of Year Assessment (Based on Edexcel Nov 2017 P2 F)

Designed for lower ability KS3 students who will be taking an end of year assessment based on the second paper of the Edexcel November 2017 new spec paper. This is to help weaker students pick up marks on selected topics such as basic manipulation, area by counting, ratio, primes, multiples. This is not covering the whole paper…just to build confidence in students who would struggle to pick up any points at the start of the paper. The powerpoint contains similar questions and the resource to print to accompany it contains brief notes and then several quick questions to practise. Answers not included.

In preparation for foundation students taking end of year examinations, this covers basic collection of terms, time jumps, factors, rounding to 1000, angles in a triangle and problem solving. Powerpoint gives the students examples and then they can try quick questions on each. Answers included.

MATCHING GAME: PERCENTAGE OF AMOUNT-5 DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES

An excellent way to finish a lesson. Print off a grid with 20 questions at the top and 20 answers at the bottom. The students work out the question and find the answer. The topics covered are percentages of amounts (easy, medium and hard), calculator percentages and percentage via multiplier. Easy to mark. Can be used as a quick Answers not included on some of them.
WHOLE LESSON: FOUNDATION NUMBER SKILLS REVISION

WHOLE LESSON: FOUNDATION NUMBER SKILLS REVISION

(1)
An entire lesson that covers foundation number elements that students frequently forget: HCF, LCM, BIDMAS, square numbers, four rules of number, powers of numbers. The mental starter is differentiated and is simple number work in context of buying items at a cafe. The powerpoint takes students through the exact questions that they will be tackling in the resource. The last slide shows the first 10 square numbers and prime numbers. The resource is then fully differentiated from 1 star to 3 star with questions based on the content of the slide show. This can be printed out and students write on the resource.
WHOLE LESSON: ANGLES IN PARALLEL LINES

WHOLE LESSON: ANGLES IN PARALLEL LINES

(1)
Whole lesson on interior, alternate, corresponding angles. There is a multi-choice starter reviewing the angle sum of a triangle. The main presentation is animated to show where corresponding angles come from. There are then some basic definitions and some worked examples with geometric reasoning. The last few slides are just questions for you to annotate at the board with your class. The spreadsheet contains multiple tasks and so can be differentiated to suit your students. Easier tasks are multi-choice and harder questions will challenge the more able
WHOLE LESSON BUY ONE GET FREE CALCULATIONS
Weltmeister7Weltmeister7

WHOLE LESSON BUY ONE GET FREE CALCULATIONS

(1)
Fully differentiated lesson aimed at foundation students who are tackling the now regular examination problems where items are bought under "buy one get free" type deals. The animated powerpoint takes students through how to simply buy, for example, 6 tins of catfood when there is a deal of buy one get one half price. There is a more challenging "how many could you buy with £10?" type question. The resource which mirrors the presentation can be written on and is fully differentiated from 1 star to 3 star depending on the confidence of the student

FOUNDATION INTRODUCTION TO PYTHAGORAS

(1)
Aimed at very young and/or low ability foundation students, this is a lesson where students will simply be told how Pythagoras allows us to calculate the missing side on a right angled triangle. The powerpoint takes them through step by step and the resource that accompanies it is fully differentiated and write-on so that no time is wasted drawing diagrams
WHOLE LESSON: MEASURING ANGLE
Weltmeister7Weltmeister7

WHOLE LESSON: MEASURING ANGLE

(1)
An entire lesson on measuring angles. The starter is a simple differentiated number chain. The powerpoint includes a fully animated protractor and steps on how to use it correctly. The resource that accompanies can be printed to an A4 booklet and should allow a standard school protractor to fit on each angle nicely. The task is differentiated with the easiest angles all being read from the right hand scale. As some students will grasp this quicker I have included a simple coins and totals exercises for those who finish early. Note this lesson does not include measuring reflex angles, as this is rare to examination papers. Perhaps this could be shown in a plenary
LUCKY DIP OF FOUNDATION DIFFERENTIATED MENTAL STARTERS

LUCKY DIP OF FOUNDATION DIFFERENTIATED MENTAL STARTERS

(1)
8 mental starters on various random topics, all aimed at foundation/KS3 students. Each is fully differentiated. Students select the red light question (easy) or the green light (harder). In most cases there is a selection of answers down the side to chose from. Answers are given at the end and students can score themselves 1 point for an easy question, 2 points for a harder or 3 if they tried both

Ten number mental starters for GCSE (differentiated)

(1)
Simple powerpoints to start the lesson which reviews number skills that any students working at the foundation level should be able to cope with. Students have 2 minutes to answer as many questions from the "easy" or "hard" section as they can
MODULE ASSESSMENT GCSE FOUNDATION: MULTI CHOICE NO MARKING

MODULE ASSESSMENT GCSE FOUNDATION: MULTI CHOICE NO MARKING

(1)
When pushed for time, a powerpoint that covers all subjects at the lower end of the foundation spectrum. Students are given an answer sheet and complete the assessment. Every 10 questions they are given the answers and keep a tally of their score. At the end there are some calculations which can be done (the entire assessment is non calculator). The students are then given a level (from the old NC KS3 levels) and their results are logged. The assessment takes an hour. I have used this at the start of the year in the past to assess what students can and cannot remember

QUICK FIRE FOUNDATION GCSE BASICS GRID 29 AND 30

(1)
Two different write-on resources which can be used in multiple ways: as a classwork task, homework task, weekly assessment or revision aid in the run up to assessments. There are 18 quick, "must know" questions for low ability foundation GCSE students of any age. There is a section at the foot of the resource for a score and a comment which students can act upon. Using multiple resources will build up a profile of which topics students need to review to enhance their learning. The sheet can be edited to give an infinite number of variations too. Check out the other grids in the series to build a bank of resources! A low ability GCSE class will take around 25 minutes to complete a grid.
