Encourage your students to use all of their senses to help develop their descriptive writing. For this activity your class need to be in pairs, where one will be blind folded and the other will safely lead them to an area in your school grounds or outdoor space (this activity is most effective when you have a variety of different places available for students to go). The blindfolded student will then begin to describe what they can hear, smell, and touch while the other partner records what they are saying. The blind folded student will then be asked to guess where they think they are before removing the blindfold. Both students will then work together to describe and record what they can see. Once they have finished, they can swap roles and do that activity again. Encourage students to think carefully about powerful descriptive language as they are describing the settings they have been taken to. Develop your class’ report writing by getting them to observe nature in the world around them. They will head outside to find an animal to produce a report on, gathering their information through close observation and research. Once they have decided on their animal, they need to begin their research through observation, books, and the internet, recording their findings on the sheets. It is best if your students have access to magnifying glasses for this activity. When the research is complete, they can then write their report using the templates, or create their own unique design. It is good for students to go outside and capture their own photos to use within the report. Each student will plan and make their own magic potion using natural materials that they can find in your outdoor space. There are two differentiated sheets, one which gets your students to think about what they might include in their potion, the other that expands on this, getting them to think about the purpose of the potion. This activity gets your class thinking carefully about adjectives and things that they could describe by placing the cards next to items they can find outside that match the adjective. For example, they might place ‘big’ next to a big tree. As an extension, they could then go on to use the card and the item they have found to write a sentence containing the adjective. Children will get lost in their imagination and creativity with this fun and engaging story telling / writing activity. It is a great way to practise creating exciting stories, thinking carefully about describing characters and settings. The children must select one of each card (character, lives, problem, & solution) and base their stories around each of the cards. The children will absolutely love it!
