This is a simple codebreaker to ensure that students can write a worded number in digits; if they finish they can have a go at writing the numbers that aren't used in words. The joke is one I found online but does the job!

Dr Doom has designed a virus that has infiltrated superhero gadgets and suits. Find the probability of each hero's gadget working. This involves simple probability, expected outcomes, relative frequency and a challenge of mutually exclusive events. It can be done as a discussion activity or as a worksheet where the challenge is on the back.

Three levels starting at simple metric conversion, then calculating with different metric units before converting imperial to metric. I used Vampire Diaries as one of my Year 9 class requested it. The worksheet is set out as a "RAG" activity where you prove what you know by answering the questions. It's short enough to be a plenary or starter and the presentation can be split into individual tasks.

Captain America wants some new shields made. You have to calculate the area then volume of the shields. The rare alloy, vibranium, that the shields are made from is limited so using old, broken shields you have to calculate if he has enough of the alloy; this part is sectors of circles. I have intentionally split the activity into two so that you can stop after the initial areas of circles depending on the class.

This is a powerpoint covering all areas of Core 2. It contains brief notes by way of an explanation, model answers to questions and a question or two for the students to do; all of the questions come with answers that you can display when ready. The slide show comes with a progress grid (regularly referred to in the presentation) so that students can mark their progress from start to finish and pinpoint any areas that may need extra work with a “red/amber/green” system that they fill in. It’s what I use in my lessons before setting tasks from worksheets or text books to practice. If there are any silly errors then let me know so I can correct them but I have been through the entire presentation with students who are keen to point out mistakes!
