Instruction writing challenges KS2
After searching for a quick set of instruction style challenges for a literacy lesson in Year 5, i decided to create my own. They are differentiated but can be adapted for a mixed ability or mixed year class.
Newspaper report oracy activity
This was an observed lesson as part of my NQT year, which focused on oracy and drama to improve report writing. There are character badges, supportive advice to the actors/actresses as well as crime images from Google.
Fact file about a mole.
This is a very basic fact file about a mole- the image is from Google-the fact file includes a title, picture and basic facts about a mole aimed at Year 1.
Doubling domino stories
After searching for doubling stories at Year 1 level I decided to make my own. This is a word document so it can be edited and adapted, there are dot patterns on one side with a short sentence underneath ‘I have __ spots my friend has___’ This visual aid helps understanding doubling by having to complete a double domino.
Peter Rabbit cloze
I used this for Year 1 after reading the Tale of Peter Rabbit as a whole class they used the word bank to complete the cloze. You could remove the word bank to extend challenge.
Place value chart
Coloured place value chart to highlight the different values of digits as you move up through the thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands and millions. All different colours to support children’s thinking.
Identifying word classes
Can be cut up to use as a starter or activity to find your partner in class. Labels and word meanings to support understanding word classes and knowing the difference.

Llancaiach Fawr Tudors in Wales
Here are lots of facts, images and general information about the famous Tudor House in Wales Llancaiach Fawr. I created this for a Rich Task with Year 5 and 6 to help them created fact files.
Pictures to support writing dialogue
Here are pictures of children and characters showing different emotions through facial expressions. I have added the questions who? what? when? why? and how? to help children think of a conversation or dialogue between 2 or more people.
Character and setting description task
Aimed at upper key stage 2, first task uses an image as a stimulus to ask questions and develop a character. Task 2 then models the ingredients of a character description.
Remembrance Day ppt
I created my own informative power point for Remembrance Day, I used it for a KS2 Assembly. Useful as a starting point or could also be used as an English lesson introduction.
Farmer Boy tasks linked to chapter 1
Intended for upper KS2 a power point with different tasks to support comprehension and reading skills for Farmer Boy.
Black History military based
This is a very simple power point with videos that will need checking before you share them with your class as they are very powerful. I have used this with a Y5/6 class during Black History month. Walter Tull and Sam King MBE are the 2 people mentioned in the powerpoint with fact files to support the teaching.

A simple text about rubbish which I have adapted questions for, you may wish to change the question types depending on your class.
Lighthouse Keepers Lunch Seagull focus
Aimed at Year 1/2. Used as a follow on task after reading the Lighthouse Keepers Lunch story. Photos and sentences from the pdf version of the story to support understanding/sequencing of the events involving the seagulls.
Fflic visits London
Powerpoint I created to help children learn positional language in Welsh using Fflic from Fflic a fflac. Sentences and vocabulary may need checking as I haven’t taught in Wales since 2016.
Lighthouse Keepers Lunch sentence starters
Aimed at Year 1/2
To support writing about the seagulls in the story The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch.
I used this to write a letter to the seagulls from Mr Grinling explaining why it’s unkind to steal food from the point of view of Mr and Mrs Grinling.
Macbeth KS2
Struggling to find any KS2 tasks for teaching Macbeth, I created my own ‘Home Learning’ tasks based on the three witches and setting descriptions as well as play scripts. Hope this saves someone time!
The journey of a sheep fleece
Photos are from my visit to Australia in 2011 when I worked in South Australia. You will need to check the updated price for a fleece as this fluctuates each year with the British Wool Board. Used for a topic themed day- all about wool.
Resource pack for 5 Minutes Peace
5 different resources to go alongside the book ‘Five Minutes Peace’ by Jill Murphy. There is a word mat with pictures to support, adjectives to describe the main character, images for writing about how much Mum does and why she might need five minutes peace. Finally there are key questions aimed at Year 2 for an oracy task but can support writing.
