I.e. when multiplying using the formal method, numbers need to be set out accurately, what methods do the children know? i.e. partitioning and formal written method. Have 5x2x6 on the board. What is the answer? How do I work this out? Once chn have got the answer, discuss whether it matters if the numbers are in any order. Resources: Dice: 1 between 2 Vocab: Multiplication, number facts, digit, numbers, single digit, LO: To revise calculation of multiples of 10. Have some numbers on the board. Can chn partition them? Discuss that in 4567, the “4” has a value of “4000”. Link this to the Place Value grid (ThHTU). Remind chn that the units column is now called the “ones” column. Have a 356 x 10 on the board. How can we work this out? Discuss different methods that the chn may come up with. Do chn (LA) realise that you can move the digits, or will they try to use the formal method? Clear up any misconceptions that we just add a zero or move the decimal point. Adult to remind chn of the clue. Look at the amount of zeroes to see how many places the numbers need to be moved.

Use the two contrasting passages (from lesson support materials in purple Ros Wilson book). One written at L4/5 and one at L2/3. Play ‘Spot the differences’ – what makes one higher than the other? Use to establish the idea of levels and assessment. Identify differences in punctuation, openers, connectives and vocabulary. Use to establish that these are the four features that can easily make a difference to the level of pupils’ writing. Show the Punctuation Pyramid. If you only use a full stop, you are punctuating at level one. Name all the pieces of punctuation – pick a few of the level 4 pieces and ask how it is used – exemplify if time permits. Short Activity 2 Taught session Read the text ‘The Monster’ from lesson support materials. Highlight or underline examples of the four generic targets using a colour code. Children to continue this in pairs. Discuss the passage sharing likes and dislikes. Emphasise the suspense. How does the writer achieve it? Talk about language and punctuation.

Activity One Show ‘fact’ and ‘opinion’ on the board. What do these mean? Talk about how autobiographies can contain both because the subject is writing their own life story. Activity One Give groups a copy of the John Lennon biography section and the section of ‘Boy’ by Roald Dahl (both from essential non-fiction anthology). Each group to divide a large piece of paper in half and create a features list for both text types. Read the 2008 Long writing task and discuss how we would tackle this. Your task is to write a biography of Pip’s life, Including information about his inventions. Success Criteria: I have revised the features of biography and autobiography. Make sure that everyone is clear on what the pictures are of. Explain that today we will be using our phonic knowledge to write some of the main words in the Rapunzel story, to prepare us for our sentence writing next session. Practise with a few words. Ask the children to recap the story of Rapunzel with a talk partner. As a class verbally retell and order the story. Fill in the story journey of Rapunzel. Discuss the order and use of time connectives and language. Ask the children to think about where the story was set. Today we will be thinking of words that describe the tower that Rapunzel was imprisoned in and different towers. We will start by describing the tower that Rapunzel was imprisoned in. Ask the children to give suggestions of their descriptive words, CT to write them up alongside the picture. Ask children to support CT in spelling the words. Talk to the children about good and bad characters, remind them off the goats and troll from last week. Name each of the characters, discuss if they were good or bad. Explain that we will make a wanted poster for the witch as we did for the troll last week. To prepare ourselves we will think of as many words to describe the witch as we can. Display the picture of the witch and give the chn time to think, pair and share. CT to model how to put these words into sentences.

I have designed 100 worksheets on coins for primary school children. I have used a variety of coins, a variety of difficulty and a variety of numbers of questions per sheet. Pupils write on the sheets how much it all adds up to. Answer sheets are provided for all worksheets.

Powerpoints and worksheets plus a week plan. sample planning : Ask children to think about their literacy lessons – TTYP and name the important details that are needed in telling a story (e.g. time, place, characters and events). Ask children to the recall names of the four main Gospels. Do they all tell the same story? (Essentially yes but lead children towards idea that they are different versions of the same story). Use analogy of an incident occurring on the playground – would each child tell the same incident in the same way? No they would tell their version of the same event – some details and word choices would differ. Talk about today’s WALT and explain that we are going to be looking at some different Gospel accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Explain to ch that, in order to achieve their WALT, they will need to be comparing and contrasting everything which they read. Explain briefly that three out of the four Gospels deal with the birth or Christ; there are many similarities and many differences in the way in which the Gospels record and explain the event. For today’s lesson we are going to focus on Matthew’s Gospel and Luke’s Gospel. Discuss possible reasons for the differences in the two accounts. What words would you use to describe the threat that this baby was to Herod? What do you think led men to come from the east by the light of a star to find this child? Herod assumed the King of the Jews sought by the wise men was a conventional king and thus a rival to his throne. TTYP – what were the names of the three gifts which the wise men brought to the baby Jesus? Briefly recap the unit so far. Who are the main characters in the Christmas story? Which two Gospel accounts of the birth of Christ have we looked at? What are the similarities and differences between them? Share the WALT and explain that this lesson will focus on the birth of Christ according to St John’s Gospel. Explain that in St. John’s Gospel there is no account of the birth of Christ, but there is a poem at the beginning that speaks about him. Use PPT to explain a prologue.

Read the story of Jesus’ birth from Matthew’s Gospel – Mt 1: 18-2: 23. Who are the main characters in this story? Concentrate on Mary, Joseph and King Herod. Talk through the story. God had promised a saviour to free us all from our sins and he sent His only son into the world for us. Talk about the priorities for any family when a baby is expected. (safety and comfort of the mother) . Activity One Come back together and watch scene featuring King Herod. Fear gripped King Herod, his mighty power was threatened. He gathered all the chief priests and scribes to see what they knew – they confirmed that Bethlehem had been foretold by the prophets. Herod launched his plan to locate the baby so that he could destroy him. What was Herod’s mistake? (look for the children to understand that Herod thought that Jesus would be an earthly King with a throne and a crown who was overthrow Herod). What were Mary and Joseph’s feelings about the birth of the baby? Do you think they were scared? Happy? Relieved? Children to TTYP and discuss – What does the birth of Jesus mean for us? Jesus truly God and truly human has come down to Earth. He brings peace, love and true freedom to those who seek him. He opens the way to heaven for us. He has come to save all people. What does the birth of Jesus teach us? God seeks those with an open heart to receive him. If you truly seek God, He will find you. It’s not money, wealth or knowledge that matters because God seeks the lowly and the humble who are looking for Him.

You will get 14 Microsoft Word documents. They are based on the Greek myths. I’ve also included for free some extra teaching materials that you can use. I’ve included too 3 medium term plans , one for each term). These cover plans and ideas not just for Literacy, but other subjects as well. I’ve also included an extra week from the next term. Feel free to use it to plug any gaps. This will help you do your own planning. Feel free to cut and paste into your own school’s plans. Ideal for someone who had to do a term’s supply like I had to do. Please bear in mind: every school is different. My plans assume you have the aide of a TA, but this is not essential. There is no differentiation in the planning. Everyone does the same thing to the best of their ability. you may want to add your own detail. These are short term plans remember. I have used walts and wilts. Your school may do something different. A very few number of weeks have a small gaps for things like tests and inset days. Use the extra week one planning for the next term (included for free) if you wish.

Happily retired, decided to put together my Persuasive writing planning from my various schools. there’s a mass of stuff! Save yourself a shedload of time and enjoy your Sundays! Plenty of great powerpoints. From different years but concentrating on years 3 to 6. example planning : Main teaching: Explain that we are now looking at another text under the umbrella of persuasive texts. Explain that we may sometimes need to write a letter to a person or organisation in order to put across our point of view and persuade them to take a course of action or come around to our point of view. Revise what we need to include in a persuasive argument, explain that it is exactly the same in a letter but in a slightly different layout. Read the example of a persuasive letter from page 17 of the L4 study guide. Deconstruct and discuss. Elicit that the opening of the letter needs to be powerful and state the objective of the letter. Talk about the conclusion of the letter and how it also needs to be powerful. Ensure that children understand the structure of a letter (addresses etc). Activity 1 Bring children back together and draw up a list of good opening lines ‘I am writing to express my disgust’ etc. Explain that, tomorrow, children will be writing their own persuasive letter. Show them the title ‘TV adverts should be banned for junk foods’ Briefly discuss what is a ‘junk food’ and brainstorm reasons for not advertising them on TV. Encourages obesity which leads to illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes. Illnesses cost money (treatment on NHS) and days off work. Junk food produces a lot of litter. The packaging cannot be recycled. If children have a bad diet their performance at school is affected. This adversely affects their education and future prospects.

For all year 5 complete planning all terms. Easily adaptable up or down, so will save you hours. Catholic in flavour but other religions included. To revise and produce a piece of journalistic writing. Revise formal & persuasive writing. Whole Class Shared Learning Explain that the next four weeks are important revision sessions. Define the word ‘revision’ and display on the working wall. In their new groups, children to define the following words, definitions on post it notes: Journalist Communication Bias Balanced Come back together and discuss, agree definitions. Would we find journalistic writing anywhere else other than in a newspaper report? Recap that we may find it in magazines or journals as well as scripts for radio and TV news broadcasts. How does journalistic writing differ from ‘personal’ writing? Formal tone, 3rd person, balanced, in journalistic writing a person puts the main points in the first sentence of the first paragraph – what will grab a person’s attention. This is followed by the rest of the details and written so that the article can easily be edited from the bottom up, if the article needs shortening. Sources are mentioned within the text and sentences and paragraphs can be short. Read the ‘Total Eclipse’ article from Essential Non-fiction and discuss. Draw out the 5 Ws. Now read ‘Packaging: The Big Cover Up’ also from Essential non-fiction. Activity One Come back together and discuss activity. What did the children find about the two articles? What are the similarities? Differences? How have the writers used language to report/persuade?

I have designed 100 worksheets on decoding numbers for the 11+ non verbal reasoning questions. There are 100 worksheets provided on a cd. Decoding is an important aspect of the 11+ exams. Ideal for parents, pupils and tutors. Answer sheets provided. The Decoding worksheet helps to reinforce spelling and problem solving skills for students. The letters of each word are replaced with other letters or numbers based on a pattern. Students must translate the words and spell them correctly. You can see an answer sheet in my picture with the answers in red.
