David Starkey - Magna Carta - Worksheet to support the BBC TV Documentary

David Starkey - Magna Carta - Worksheet to support the BBC TV Documentary We take our liberties for granted. They seem absolute and untouchable. But they are the result of a series of violent struggles fought over 800 years that, at times, have threatened to tear our society apart. On the frontline was a document originally inked on animal skin - Magna Carta. Distinguished constitutional historian David Starkey looks at the origins of the Great Charter, created in 1215 to check the abuses of King John - and how it nearly died at birth. He explores its subsequent deployment, its contribution to making everyone - even the monarch - subject to the rule of law, and how this quintessentially English document migrated to the North American colonies and eventually became the foundation of the US constitution. Magna Carta has become a universal symbol of individual freedom against the tyranny of the state, but with ever-tightening government control on our lives, is it time to resurrect it? Starkey has a special encounter with an original Magna Carta manuscript at the British Library, one of only four from 1215 to survive. He also examines other unique medieval manuscripts that trace the tumultuous history of Magna Carta, the Article of the Barons listing their demands in June 1215, and the papal bull declaring Magna Carta null and void less than two months after it was sealed. Written as an independent/enrichment/ independent learning activity for GCSE and A Level students the resource follows the documentary with a series of data collection and analytical tasks. Written in Publisher and formatted to A3 the worksheet is editable and can be saved as a PDF for A4 printing A 3 Page Document

BBC - Lucy Worsley Investigates - The Princes in The Tower

(0)
What really happened to the princes in the tower? Lucy Worsley uncovers the story of the two boys, whose disappearance in 1483 has led to centuries of mystery and speculation. The two princes, Edward and Richard, lived during the Wars of the Roses, a decades-long fight over the English throne between the house of Lancaster and the house of York. Edward IV, the boys’ father, was the first Yorkist King. His eldest son, Edward, was destined to inherit the throne - and this fact entirely shaped his young life. Edward was just 12 when his father King Edward IV died, and his age meant he wasn’t considered ready to rule. Edward IV had appointed his brother Richard to be the young King’s protector, but not everyone was happy with this arrangement. What followed was a tussle for control between Richard and the Queen’s family, the Woodvilles. The princes were taken to the Tower of London ‘for their own protection’, but when a priest declared the boys illegitimate and Richard next in line to the throne, Richard was crowned King. The gaps in the historical record have fuelled 500 years of speculation, so Lucy speaks to Tim Thornton, Professor of History at the University of Huddersfield, who has found evidence of one account of what happened written by Thomas More; and Matthew Lewis, Chair of the Richard III Society for his views on the events. The enduring story of the Princes in the Tower not only reveals fascinating insights about childhood, and the nature of politics and power in mediaeval England, but how the interpretations of events are never fixed, with new evidence ensuring this story continues to fascinate. 4 Page resource Written in Publisher and formatted to A3 the resource can be saved as a PDF for A4 printing

The Crusades -Ep3- Victory and Defeat - Worksheet to support the BBC TV Doc with Thomas Asbridge

(0)
Worksheet written to support the BBC Documentary series presented by Thomas Asbridge Written in Publisher to A3 format, the resource can be edited and saved as a PDF for A4 printing In the concluding episode of the series, Dr Thomas Asbridge reveals that the outcome of these epic holy wars was decided not on the hallowed ground of Jerusalem, but in Egypt. As trade blossomed between Christians and Muslims and the Mongol hordes arrived from Asia, a saintly French king - afire with crusading zeal - and the most remarkable Muslim leader of the Middle Ages fought for ultimate victory in the East. Drawing upon eyewitness chronicles and the latest archaeological evidence, Dr Asbridge argues that it was a fearsome slave-warrior from the Russian Steppes - now forgotten in the West - who finally sealed the fate of the crusades. And, most controversially of all, Asbridge challenges the popular misconception that the medieval crusades sparked a clash of civilisations between Islam and the West that continues to this day.

BBC Normans - Ep3 - Normans of the South - Worksheet supporting the Doc - Prof. Robert Bartlett

(0)
Professor Robert Bartlett explores the impact of the Normans on southern Europe and the Middle East. The Normans spread south in the 11th century, winning control of southern Italy and the island of Sicily. There they created their most prosperous kingdom, where Christianity and Islam co-existed in relative harmony and mutual tolerance. It became a great centre of medieval culture and learning. But events in the Middle East provoked the more aggressive side of the Norman character. In 1095, the Normans enthusiastically answered the Pope’s call for holy war against Islam and joined the first crusade. They lay siege to Jerusalem and eventually helped win back the holy city from the muslims. This bloody conquest left a deep rift between Christianity and Islam which is still being felt to this day. 9-1 OCR History B, SHP History Learning/Topic Placemats for The People’s Health: 1250 to present day Written in PowerPoint Topic Covered: The People’s Health GCSE Learning Placemat – Topic 4: Modern Britain - 1900 onwards (The reverse side of the placemat remains the same throughout this study unit). These interactive learning placemats were designed to meet the challenges of the new 9-1 GCSE. They build upon the successful ‘Edexcel Medicine Through Time’ Placemats that I previously designed (and which received 5* reviews by all who have purchased them up to the time of launching these new materials – see: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/9-1-edexcel-gcse-history-of-medicine-place-mat-question-structure-11627611 ). My learning placemats have been identified as best practice during a ‘Challenge Partners’ review as well as being identified as best practice by other History teachers on the Olevi ‘Outstanding Teacher Programme’. These OCR Placemats are produced to the same quality and have been used by GCSE Students within my MAT. The new design learning placemats support both teachers and students in addressing the: a) dramatic increase in the curriculum content needed for the different units b) support the need for increased literacy demands through a language for learning section c) help students become familiar and more confident in recognising the correct response needed for the unprecedented number of different question styles The placemats are designed to be double sided. One side focuses on the CONTENT: providing an overview of key knowledge and understanding needed (this will change for each topic area within this GCSE unit). Every placemat across the GCSE range is designed to encourage greater understanding of: Historical Context - through timelines, picture prompts and key words Awareness of the ‘big picture’ so students can see how individual lessons fit into the unit and make clearer links between prior and future learning – through ‘Big Picture’ questions. (Identified as good practice by leading practitioner such as Hattie and Morrison-McGill). Better Literacy – through selected ‘language for learning’ vocab box. Memory prompts to support revision – through the use of carefully selected images - all categorised under themes that underline each period. Increased awareness of metacognition – through PME (Progress, Monitor and Evaluation Time) questions to encourage students to deconstruct their learning and identify key factors (eg. Ideas, attitudes & beliefs, wealth & poverty, urbanisation, science and technology and the role of local and national government) and make links between features. A pictorial metacognition man with 5 question prompts will support student reflection. The reverse side contains guidance on EXAM TECHNIQUE through: Identifying the nature of the question styles for each GCSE Unit and the allocated marks available. Elizabeth - From the Prison to the Palace - Pt 1 of 4 Wrksht to support the Starkey Documentary

(0)
The first part focuses on Elizabeth’s early life - before her coronation she was disinherited, sexually abused and imprisoned, while Henry VIII had her mother executed. The sexual abuse coupled with the uprising by the Protestant Wyatt against Queen Mary, which led to Elizabeth’s imprisonment in the Tower of London, may have resulted in the Queen’s deep mistrust of men. Elizabeth, the virgin Queen, the most powerful woman in English history. She emerged as a young princess against a backdrop of civil unrest, political intrigue, executions and coups. She ruled for 45 years and presided over a new kind of state. Her reign saw England emerge from the threat of European annexation to burst forth in a unique flowering of culture and became the world’s leading sea power. In this four part series David Starkey charts the rise and fall of her reign and reveals the powerful resonance it has for the present. This series covers one of the most glamorous and exciting reigns in English history, with bloodthirsty tales of sex, lust, murder and mayhem. Written as an extension and enrichment task for GCSE 9-1 or A Level teaching Written in Publisher and formatted to A3 it is also saved as a PDF for A4 printing
