This resource consists of a spelling booklet of words in 9 phases of difficulty and a spelling test template. The growing difficulty of the words presented is linked to the pupils’ developing knowledge of phonics. These documents can be used in lessons and as homework. For both resources in this unit, we have included both a PDF and a Word version. The Word version is editable and the PDF version ensures that the format of the documents is fixed.

This resource consists of a powerpoint presentation and some worksheets to use with Chapter 10 of Michael Morpurpo’s ‘Private Peaceful’. The main activity is for pupils to plan and write a persuasive text in which they attempt to persuade others that a character in the story is a good or a bad leader. Some additional time could be used to turn these written texts into spoken presentations in which the pupils attempt to persuade the class. The powerpoint helps to organise the lesson, checking pupils’ understanding of the chapter and setting up class/group discussions. The worksheets consist of a writing plan for pupils to complete, lined paper for the writing activity and an extension activity in which pupils use a thesaurus to find as many suitable adjectives as they can to describe famous leaders from history. They may also research these leaders if they have time, although they should be familiar with them. This resource can last for between 2 and 6 hours depending on how much time you allow for each activity. This is the lesson plan: • Pre-Reading Discussion: *Discuss what you already know about World War 1 and what life was like for the soldiers in it. • Listen to/read the 9th chapter of the novel. Check your comprehension of the story by describing what happened using the images on the lesson powerpoint. • Class Discussion: Leaders Discuss what makes a good leader Which characters in the story take on the role of a leader? • Lesson Activity: Plan and write a persuasive text in which you attempt to convince others that a character in the story is or is not a good leader. • Extension Work: Adjectives For Famous Leaders Using a thesaurus, find as many different, but suitable adjectives to describe the famous leaders pictured. This bundle includes Functional Skills English activities and revision exercises for Entry Level 1, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3 and Level 1. There are reading, writing and speaking and listening activities for each of these levels in this bundle. All of the resources deal with the theme of Bonfire Night/Guy Fawkes Night. They can be used as class activities, revision exercises and/or homework. Many of the resources can lead to research activities or class discussion. Pupils who have worked at different levels of reading can present what they have learned from their texts to each other. The first asks pupils to complete an application form, asking for permission to use a chosen venue for a Halloween party. The second asks them to write to a friend to invite them to a Halloween party. The tasks can be used as exam revision or as stand-alone activities during Halloween. This resource asks students to write a Christmas dinner invitation. There is a task sheet giving instructions and a colourful template on which to write the invitations. These tasks are differentiated two ways, one for a written invitation and one for an invitation in the form of a poster. There is also an extension task based on what people around the world eat for Christmas dinner. This resource works well with our 'Who Would You Treat To A Special Christmas Dinner?" lessons. This resource consists of a powerpoint presentation and some worksheets to use with Chapter 9 of Michael Morpurpo’s ‘Private Peaceful’. The main activity is for pupils to write a 1st Person narrative as if they are a soldier in World War 1. This narrative will centre on a particular World War 1 setting selected by the pupils. This could be the trenches, no-man’s-land, a hospital, a French village or any other suitable settings pupils think of. The powerpoint helps to organise the lesson, checking pupils’ understanding of the chapter and setting up class/group discussions. The worksheets consist of a writing plan for pupils to complete, lined paper for the writing activity and a barbed wire word wall for pupils to complete as an extension activity. In this they decorate the barbed wire lined page with words and phrases related to World War 1. This resource can last for between 2 and 4 hours depending on how much time you allow for each activity. This is The Ultimate Writing Championship! Pupils complete a series of writing challenges that focus on specific skills. Each challenge has a warrior who represents that challenge. To complete the challenge, the pupil has to achieve the challenge target and defeat the warrior. At the end of each unit, they must face the Stage Champion in a battle for the Stage Title. Pupils can also compete for the tag team title, working with friends or with staff support. In these title matches, pupils are assessed on all the skills included in the stage. The Ultimate Writing Championship raising pupils’ engagement when writing. The challenges can be used as part of a literacy hour or as extension work. The writing topics are for you or the pupil to choose. They can therefore be linked to any lesson, therefore promoting literacy across the curriculum. Each challenge has an easy to mark system and each unit has a challenger record for staff and pupils to record their victories. This bargain bundle contains all the Stages of the Men’s Division.
