For several years I worked with Easylearn publishers, developing resources for children struggling with English and Maths. I am one of the creators of the Froggy Match-it phonics app, which helps beginner readers to learn to read and spell effectively.

This graded series of nine books contains over 400 tried and tested phonics worksheets. The sheets are completely different from those in the Big Phonics Books I have produced, so they provide even more practice, and also represent good value for money. Book 1 Single Sounds looks at individual letters and their sounds. Book 2 Hot Pet looks at consonant-vowel-consonant words, and Book 3 Pat’s Bed looks at bdp differentiation. Books 4 Kick the Ball and 5 Black Mask look at double final consonants and adjacent consonants respectively. Book 6 Fish and Chips looks at consonant digraphs, while Book 7 Kate’s Kite looks at split digraphs, words such as ‘make’, ‘cone’ and ‘fine’. Book 8 New Coat looks at vowel phonemes, and Book 9 A Bright Invention looks at silent letters, prefixes and suffixes. Previously sold through Easylearn.

This five-book series, which is designed for children who need extra support and a small steps approach, complements any phonics programme. The clear layout and instructions enable independent working, and there is plenty of practice at each stage, making the sheets useful for literacy intervention. Each book has over 100 worksheets, is suitable for a wide age-range and is ideal for homework. The areas covered by each book are as follows: book 1 : the letters of the alphabet and their sounds book 2 : consonant-vowel-consonant words book 3 : -ll, -ss, -ff, -ck and -ng endings and adjacent consonants book 4 : long vowel phonemes, including alternative spellings book 5 : prefixes, suffixes and alternative pronunciations for some graphemes.

First Stop covers the first, basic elements of punctuation: capital letters and full stops, uses of capitalisation and question marks. It is excellent for pupils with special needs. Vocabulary is limited and the motivating tasks can be completed independently. First Stop is suitable for a wide age range. It fits in well with the grammar and punctuation work for the English Programme of Study for KS1. Two other similar books are available: Stop it!, which covers more punctuation rules and is suitable for older pupils, and Stop it, Editor!, in which pupils edit texts and find mistakes. Making Notes helps to develop a range of comprehension and note-taking skills, and contains interesting information texts with writing frames for pupils to record key points. The sheets encourage effective comprehension: accurate close reading to understand the text, and search reading, to locate the specific information required.
