For several years I worked with Easylearn publishers, developing resources for children struggling with English and Maths. I am one of the creators of the Froggy Match-it phonics app, which helps beginner readers to learn to read and spell effectively.

Start Making Notes helps to develop a range of comprehension and note-taking skills, and contains interesting information texts with writing frames for pupils to record key points. It is aimed at KS1 children, including less-able readers. The sheets encourage effective comprehension: accurate close reading to understand the text, and search reading, to locate the specific information required. Vocabulary is limited and the motivating tasks can be completed independently. First Stop is suitable for a wide age range. It fits in well with the grammar and punctuation work for the English Programme of Study for KS1. Each of the three books contains stories to improve sequencing and text comprehension. Book 1 has three-part texts to put in order, Book 2 four-part and Book 3 five-part texts. Each story has two versions: one with simpler text and more limited vocabulary, which is useful for less-confident readers. Suitable for KS1 plus older pupils with less-developed literacy skills. Previously available through Easylearn. Practical note: the easier version of each story has a top right-hand corner picture which includes a cat, the harder one features a dog. Stories are interchangeable and an easier and a harder version can be used at the same time within a group of children.
