Football sabermetrics

Football sabermetrics

(0)
a set of cards that will need laminating (time consuming but when done can be used for a every class) that allow the pupils to choose a football team with a budget, that involves them working with large numbers, they then have to look at statisitcs and pick a statistically good team and see if the prices differ, i did this as a short project but could be extended by enetering both teams into the schools fanatsy football league and seeing which team performs best, you could also look further into sabermetircs (made famous by the film moneyball) and it's use in other sports

a mixture of resources on code breaking including a codebreaking timeline and some worksheets on cracking the genetic code the lesson for the genetic code could start with a picture of the x-ray diffraction pattern for DNA this could be snatched off the worksheet and pupils to guess what it shows.
Rocket lander

Rocket lander

(0)
This is based on the rough science idea. Pupils have to design a rocket lander to bring a payload (of an egg) to earth safely. There are some rules, and they can only test it with the egg once. When they have completed their testing there is an evaluation sheet to complete and a certificate attached to reward pupils who land the egg safely
Columbine

Columbine

I designed this for the second step violence reduction programme where pupils use the 5 questions starter to guess what the lesson may be about. Then read them the description of Columbine and get them to try and guess what you are describing. It leads into a discussion of the effect of these school shootings and how they have changed school policy, you can also show a little of the Michael Moore documetary 'Bowling for Columbine' with it.
Alchemy Module

Alchemy Module

(1)
Planning and activity book for alchemy module, I use this with year 7/8. Pupils start by looking at the core alchemical idea of the great work which is broken into four stages that they can draw pictures to describe. Then they look at the developing theory of the elements (I do flame tests here too), transmutation (changing one thing to another; I let pupils decide their own experiment to carry out so long as it is safe and involves a change), immortality and cosmetics, nuclear transmutation can be covered but I haven't planned it in yet, the big booklet may take some finishing or adapting.
