Solving Equations
A lesson to help explain solving equations where the subject appears twice using bags of sweets. A simple differentiated worksheet for students to practice with, where some of the answers are negative / fractional
Mixed Numbers and Top Heavy or Improper Fractions
To use this lesson you will need a decent sized quantity of multi-link cubes or similar for the "Chocolate Factory" - the worksheet has two routes depending on how confident the students are at converting each type of fraction.
Pythagoras Investigation
An investigative lesson where students can "discover" Pythagoras' theorem. Note - you will need to give each group of students a large number of accurately cut squares eg 6 x 6, 9 x 9 which I have not supplied. With prompting students should be able to establish and generalise not only that when the three squares form a right angled triangle, then when they dont form a right angle what this means with regards to the opposite angle!
Straight Line Graphs
An initial lesson on Straight Line Graphs - lots of discussion and drawing of lines so students should make the link between gradient / intercept
Angles in Parallel Lines
A comprehensive booklet and series of activities for students to draw and discover the main angle facts surrounding parallel lines, with plenty of practice. It would be useful if students had some form of A/B/C/D voting system for this lesson
Probability Trees
Suitable for KS4 or able KS3 student this is an introduction to probability, with a discussionon the probability scale, through the basics of Tree usage, right upto using a tree for "without replacement" questions. There are opportunities for discussion and extension within the worksheet materials
Direct Proportion
A complete lesson on direct proportion including a starter and some GCSE style questions.
Maths Taboo Template
A 2 page, easily customisable taboo starter / plenary activity. Change the keyword and make the forbidden words as hard or easy as you need to suit the group. 32 cards should be enough!
Straight Line Graphs - Alien Zapping
Students have to 'zap' as many aliens as they can by drawing three straight lines and writing their equations.
Sheets can either be laminated for multi-use or a purchase of some spaghetti allows students to experiment before they commit pen to paper!
Substitution into Expressions
A task where students can challenge themselves to substitute negative numbers into algebraic expressions - their work is scored according to their complexity, by their colleagues.
Multiplication - Surds, Indices, Algebra, Directed
Grid style puzzles to assess key skill / revise
There are 6 / 8 versions of the same puzzle on each sheet. Tougher problems take out the information in the grid and students have to work backwards to find the missing term or number.
Algebra Blockbusters
Set pairs (or two students and a singleton!) against each other to work their way across this Algebra revision board in the style of blockbusters. Can be laminated and written on or give students two alternate coloured highlighter pens, which gives you a visible guide as to their progress.
Finding the nth term
A simple sheet to enable practice on finding the nth term of a linear sequence, the 10th, 50th and hundredth terms. Ideal for supporting GCSe foundation or as a revision homework for higher ability groups
Angle Properties - Revision
A complete Revision lesson for putting all those angle facts together, I use this prior to teaching angles in parallel lines. Starter designed to recall previous knowledge, lots of extension opportunities and then a riddle activity for a plenary to reinforce those facts
Circle Theorems 3 - Tangents and Chords
Complete lesson for teaching theorems relating to tangents. Students draw and describe first and then apply the theorems to some exercises. As a plenary, students first fill in the missing angles before being presented with the word to accompany the exam question.
Circle Theorems - Complete Lesson 2
A lesson to consolidate and expand upon grade 'B' circle theorems. Extension work into 'A' Grade problems and an exam question as a plenary
Circle Theorems - Complete Lesson 1
An initial 3 part lesson to familiarise students with language of circles. Students can then investigate/establish first three circle theorems by drawing/measuring and using what they have learned to solve a few problems. Plenary states the proper names for the theorems and invites students to apply the theorems to further problems.
Factors, Multiples, Primes, Bingo
A bingo activity focussing on students knowledge of classifying numbers as square, cubes, multiples, odd / even etc.
A fun activity that can generate plenty of discussion, check prior knowledge and provide an opportunity for higher level thinking on the topic.
Adding and Subtracting Fractions - Lesson
KS3 / GCSE Lesson Plan. A clear powerpoint to explain how to add/subtract fractions. Ideal for first lesson on topic.
Constructions Carousel
A group based recall activity for all major constructions. Read the Smart file for how to run as a lesson.
