This works really well. Just print off a selection of NMR, IR and mass spectra and pupils write exam questions and mark schemes (easy to differentiate). They then swap and try each others exam questions.

I get the class to make a colourful A3 table with tests and expected results for all the homologous series. We also discuss how you tell the different between alcohols/acids and alkanes/alkenes using IR (give them copies of the spectra in ppt). This worked really well - I told them to stick the posters on the ceiling over their heads - lol

lesson plan for medeleev lesson - students watch link, making notes on mendeleev and then create a radio interview with the scientist, explaining what he did. This works really well!
