I set h/w to use books to make notes on the diazonium ion (will have interesting results). I start lesson by offering pupils a selection of sweets (including skittles) and then put up first slide. Would they allow their children to eat these sweets? after this lesson we do the prac to make an azo dye

This works really well. Just print off a selection of NMR, IR and mass spectra and pupils write exam questions and mark schemes (easy to differentiate). They then swap and try each others exam questions.

I get the class to make a colourful A3 table with tests and expected results for all the homologous series. We also discuss how you tell the different between alcohols/acids and alkanes/alkenes using IR (give them copies of the spectra in ppt). This worked really well - I told them to stick the posters on the ceiling over their heads - lol
