i start the lesson with a wham bottle demo (for extra entertainment tell pupils they need to look and listen carefully because the reaction can be hard to notice). I demo the citric acid prac in a balloon, so they can all feel how cold it gets.

a few general questions to check understanding

demo prac, get pupils to draw scientific diagram and peer assess, then do prac themselves

quick and easy - just project and offer prize to who ever finishes first!

pupils fill in the blanks and find pictures and draw them into the boxes as required

Give each member of the class a copy of key words, they have to find definitions and learn. At start of next lesson read out definitions and they write down the key word.

I split my year 12's into small groups and give them 1 alkane reaction each. They have to assess risks and hazards and then demo the prac to the rest of the class - explaining their risk assessment at start - a good ice breaker at the start of the course!
