If you are looking for a way to incorporate a little hands on science into your classroom, you might want to consider hatching chicks in your room! I am fortunate to have a farmer husband who does help me with a lot of the supplies and knowledge but that doesn't mean that YOUR classroom cannot have the same experience. This is probably hands-down one of my FAVORITE lessons. At first it began by simply being a "how to" writing project for my kiddos. It then went into a hands-on science experiment where my kids were able to "experience" what it is like to prepare a body for burial like the ancient Egyptians. This activity has been tested and tweaked several times. I have had so much success with it, I have used it for my formal observation. I have had our district PR rep come and take pictures to use on our district website. This activity is student run with very little assistance needed by you the teacher. Included are several graphic organizers, writing pages, and rubric. I have included pocket chart strips for each step. This unit is all about the Ring Tailed Lemur. I like being able to engage my students in these research projects during our ELA block.
