If your class is about to move up to secondary school then check out this perfect resource for you! This A3 poster features several fiction books, with stories that specifically focus on characters that are about to begin secondary school. Many illustrate some of the challenges they face, as well as some of the positives of such a big change. It is hoped that students who are about to go to big school will be able to read about these experiences, which may help to alleviate any real anxieties and issues they have in real life. All books are appropriate for Year 6 students to read, and are a diverse and inclusive collection. Feel free to pop up in your classroom, or re-size and print out as leaflets to give to students. Mental Health Awareness Week is from 13th to the 19th May. Stimulate learning, emphathy and insight about mental health issues with this fiction book recommendations poster. All of the books are appropriate for young teens (Key Stage 3 pupils) and feature a comprehensive collection of diverse and inclusive books that I would recommend to any student. Each book is labelled with a particular mental health condition, which can act as trigger warnings. Make sure you have the books available in your school library and pop up this fab poster around the school to promote to pupils. Books are also differentiated so there are some high level books for those more able students, as well as accessible texts for weaker readers. Create a whole school culture of reading with this nifty book quiz for your secondary school! The quiz features 15 questions (with answer pages), which showcases a number of up-to-date kids and teen books that have been published this past year. There are also some classic books included. The set of questions are fully diverse, inclusive and differentiated. This resource is intended to be used during tutor time - works best for vertical tutoring - in the run up to Christmas as a light, competitative activity to get students talking about books! Go through this 51 powerpoint slide resource with your students, which will take around 20 minutes if you crack on! You could even use it as a competition between school houses to see which is the best and arrange prizes for the winners, it’s totally up to you!
