This is one of my absolute favourite lessons. Students read through the background knowledge/notes before working their ways through a 21 piece evidence sort to answer the question ‘Who killed Kirov?’ Students then place the card sort information into piles which suggest Stalin was guilty of the murder and evidence that suggests he was not, before arriving at an opinion abotu why the 1st December Law and the subsequent purges and period of Yezhovschina occured. My students truly love this lesson and I really hope yours do too!

This is a great full lesson. Students begin with a starter activity which teaches them the basic steps to the Charleston before progressing through a very detailed and comprehensive set of notes covering the changes in the period in music, women, sports, architecture, religion, leisure and cinema. Students are then allocated a character card (flapper, housewife, young black American, Italian immigrant, gangster, businessman, Klansman, farmer) and complete a scaffolded worksheet explaining how there character would feel about the changes. They are then paired together to hold a discussion with another character in a meaningful way in order to reveal the different attitudes in the period. My students love this topic and I really hope yours do as well.

My students love this activity. 125+ questions based on the following categories: Early problems 1919-23 Golden years 1923-29 Rise of the Nazis 1929-33 Terror 1933-45 Propaganda 1919-45 Life in Nazi Germany 1933-45 It takes a little while to cut out the cards and the board and works best once laminated but your students will love this revision activity. The questions are designed to boost subject knowledge and focus on precise historical detail which in turn helps student examination performance. The questions are based around the notes from my lessons so should stretch most students but if you require a differentiated version you can allow students a fixed time to research responses on the internet as they play.

I am very proud of the precision and amount of detail in this lesson and its designed to be engaging and to ensure students make measurable progress. The class begin by exploring an odd one out exercise for the starter activity and this draws their attention to early Chinese views of westerners. This then leads into an extremely detailed set of notes (which I created when teaching in China) before students attempt a 30 piece hexagonal card sort which is colour-coded into factors. The class then make links and explain the Key Question before finishing with a fun ‘Just-a-Minute’ plenary in order to test their understanding and knowledge gained. My students love this lesson. They begin with an odd one out activity designed to get them thinking about Stalin as the ‘man of steel’ before working their way through detailed notes. They then proceed to take part in a tale of the tape activity where they identify Stalin’s strengths and Trotsky’s mistakes/weaknesses. Following this students complete a piece of structured piece of writing before completing a plenary exercise in which they create a pentagonal plan of reasons which address the Key Question. This is a one-page Power point slide (editable) which can be set as a project-based assessment for the second order concept of change and continuity (this one about castles). Students are given clear criteria (beginning, developing, expected, and mastery) and a set task with a list of key words which can help them. The slide also has a section to show students how long they have to work on this assessed piece of work. I teach this lesson as part of my unit on 1920s USA and it always proves tremendously successful. Students are allocated one of seven detailed character cards - these include Sacco’s Defence Lawyer Fred Moore and the biased Judge Webster Thayer amongst others. From here students familiarise themselves with their character and work through 15 pieces of evidence ranging from ballistics documents to the hat that Sacco was reported to have worn (it did not fit). Once they have considered the evidence students then use the trial reenactment template provided to act out one of the most famous trials of the Twentieth Century. I get my class to shout out “Sono innocente!” upon news of the verdict and it is always a powerful lesson. I hope you enjoy this series of activities as much as my students do.

My students love this project! In this 14 page pack you will find background information on the Industrial Revolution as well as information cards on 20 different inventions ranging from John Kay’s Flying Shuttle through to James Watt’s Steam Engine. Students need to research their invention and make a case for its historical significance using specific criteria (durability, importance at the time, number effected etc). The class then present to the Dragon’s (for me its usually SLT). This mini-project really brings the past to life and is one of the highlights of my teaching career. I’ve always found Maoism fascinating and I created this lesson when I worked at an international school in China. As such the level of detail in the notes is of really high quality and its a lesson which my students always found really enjoyable. The class work through the notes and use it to create a newspaper from the perspective of either the Communists or the Nationalists. The ‘Red Globe’ proforma included in the lesson pack allows for students to refine their arguments and carefully select only the most relevant evidence in order to formulate an answer to the key question. I really hope your students get as much from this lesson as mine do.

I use this as an introduction to Historical skills for my 7th graders and it works really well. Students are given background knowledge and then handed the 13 sources in order. As they receive them they discuss what can be inferred from each piece of evidence and complete the history mystery grid. In this lesson students work through a ‘what’s behind the squares’ starter activity which introduces them to the horrors of the First World War. They then proceed to work through the detailed set of notes and use this knowledge in the main activiation tasks (questions to test comprehension and a mind-map activity) before testing their chronological understanding of the notes in the ‘play your cards right’ plenary. This lesson is crucial to an understanding of the USA in the 1920s. Students begin by exploring how First World War propaganda impacted on marketing techniques with a detailed PPT before progressing to a very detailed set of notes. From this students complete a worksheet designed to explore the significance of various 1920s inventions. The lesson concludes with a Dingbats-style plenary to test comprehension. My students always feel exam-ready thanks to this lesson. The class begin with a source analysis starter in which they have to reconstruct a source from a jigsaw. This allows for great discussion about what is in the foreground/background etc. The class then work through a set of very detailed notes on the First and Second New Deals before creating an emoji storyboard to explain it in order to show comprehension. In this lesson students begin by exploring Maoist propaganda of a source using the OPVL technique (origin, purpose, value and limitations) before moving on to work through a set of notes about the Great Leap Forward and the Five Year Plans. Students are then given a job application activity where they need to apply for one of two jobs using the information provided. The lesson concludes with a game of bingo to test understanding of all the key words (emboldened in the notes). My students love this topic and I created this resources whilst teaching History in China so they mean a lot to me. I hope you will find them just as useful in your own teaching.

A comprehensive fully resourced lesson. Students begin with a ‘what’s behind the squares?’ starter PPT which gets them to think about the brutality of the regime prior to the May 4th Movement. The class then work through a detailed set of notes before taking on the challenge of creating a rap-style confrontation between Chiang Kai-Shek and Mao (to help with this there are modelled responses and a crib sheet of key information on both). If students prefer they can of course also replace the rap with letter writing. The lesson concludes with a formative assessment PPT which tests students subject knowledge acquired in the lesson in which they decide if a piece of information relates to the GMD or the CCP. I love this lesson because it makes tracking student progress very clear. I hope you enjoy it.

This lesson will really get your students actively engaged. They begin by figuring out the anagrams of key terms and phrases from the course before working through a detailed set of notes on how China changed after the 1911 Revolution. From here students proceed to complete a 15 piece card sort, arranging them into social, political and economic impacts of Warlordism. Students then complete the lesson with a fun activity (Dingbats) designed to test how well they have understood the key vocabulary and events from the lesson. This lesson was one I created and planned while teaching in China so I really invest as much precision in the historical detail as possible. I hope your students enjoy it as much as mine.

Over 200 revision flash cards based on key people and events from Weimar and Nazi Germany. Simply print, cut out, and fold. These took me forever to create but they are my number one ‘go to’ revision tool for my exam classes and have had wholly positive feedback. Also works extremely well as an end of unit activity whereby students can use the cards to create a visual mind-map / layout of the course. Give them to your students before exams to ensure their subject knowledge is spot on!
