Celebrate national Polish heritage month during the month of October by making"wycinanki"-'paper-cut design corn poppy flowers (the national flower of Poland) with your students. They will also learn about using the design element of symmetry to create balance, harmony, and order in their artwork just like the traditional wycinanki that was first started in the 1800’s by Polish peasants to decorate their houses. They will also incorporate a layering process to make a more intricate design and to practice their fine motor skills. In the wake of the recent Coronavirus scare, it is urgent to educate children on recognizing the importance of proper hand washing and hygiene techniques to get rid of and prevent the spread of germs. They will do this by constructing and designing 2 opposite characters that symbolize a hand that is properly washed verses unwashed aka the superhero clean hand verses the villain dirty hand therefore encouraging imaginative play through these customized characters of a protagonist verses an antagonist. They will learn to associate the properties of each one with this visual aid that they will remember to identify clean verses dirty hands. They will also be able to define the vocabulary word for the scientific term for germ - pathogen and how they get transferred.
