Contains 1 x 14 slide Interactive Teaching powerpoint 1 x Negative numbers in Context Worksheet 1 x Escape the Room Plenary activity This lesson starts with a stopwatch starter where students need to to answer 4 questions based around topics covered in covered in previous lessons. Main Lesson Finding a new temperature after a rise or fall. 3 Examples This leads into 3 mini whiteboard questions displayed onscreen Finding the difference between positive and negative numbers (temperatures) -1 Examples slide -4 Mini whiteboard questions (answers in screen) -This leads into an individual worksheet where students have to answer a mixture of questions on finding a temperature after a rise or fall and Finding the difference between positive and negative(temperatures) -Followed by an exam style question (answer on slide) Finished with a Recap slide I have included an Escape the Room activity which can be used as a plenary or at any other point in the lesson as you wish. A full lesson on Place Value and Negative Numbers includes Starters, Differentiated and Exam Questions, Teaching Powerpoint, Activities, Worksheets, Escape the Room Plenary. The lesson covers reading and writing large numbers putting whole numbers including negatives in order finding difference between positive and negative numbers Contains 1 x Interactive Teaching powerpoint 1 x Maths in the News printables 1 x Negative Numbers worksheet 1 x ordering numbers differentiated gold, silver, bronze worksheet 1 x Escape the Room whole lesson plenary This lesson starts with a discussion on large numbers prompted by on screen slide. There is then a Starter in which students have to unscramble the letters to create the numbers. Then the method for writing and reading large numbers is discussed and examples given on the slides. This leads into questions displayed on screen which learners can complete on mini whiteboards. At this point learners look at laminated news headlines placed around the room and answer the questions on the worksheet that accompanies the task There is then a plenary task on election results to complete assess learning. Examples are then shown of how to put numbers in order of size, followed by a differentiated gold, silver bronze question sheet and a plenary question to assess learning Examples of how to find difference between positive and negative numbers are then shown, followed by some questions to test the skills and then an activity that involves learners answering find the difference questions and creating a bar chart. A plenary question assesses learning on this outcome. To assess whole lesson learning there are 3 exam style questions to complete and an Escape the Room activity sheet. Ask a question of Team 1, if they are right the bell on the test the strength machine will ring, if not it won’t. If not, ask the other team. Answers can be displayed. There are different ways to play the game it is up to you. I split class in two and nominated a team captain, the captain could only give the answer the team agreed on (led to discussion). Once answer given, went to home screen and clicked to test the strength. (make sure you know the answer) as you have to click an incorrect or correct icon to run the test your strength machine. If right great, if wrong went back to question screen and asked 2nd team, repeated process. Was fun and interactive, got students working, thinking and discussing
