Cbeebies Alphablocks CVC word family velcro words

(1)
Children love Alphablocks and they are an amazing program that really does help little ones understand phonics and helps them on their initial journey on how to read. This resource was made using word families because that will help hearing the different sounds and therefore help with initial reading of CVC words. It is also good for children to hear different intial sounds. It is important to include pictures with each word too so they can link words to real life objects. Once laminated, velcro needs adding to the dots so the Alphablocks can be stuck down. The children can then move these initial sounds infront of the picture of the middle and end sounds to make a word. They can then read it and match it to the pictures. Word families included are: at, ad, et, en, in, ig, ot, og, ug, un. Reading is a ‘silent’ process for many children. When first learning they do not possess the ability to imagine what the written word is telling us. They have many, many other skills they have to master before they can get there. This resource is aimed at beginner readers and to try and put some fun into reading. They read it and then they have to match it to the correct picture out of the three available. With a picture to help young children visualise what they are reading, they have a purpose to reading it too and not just going through the motions. I made a lot of resources for traditional tales that can be printed off and laminated. Then the idea was for the children in my class to access these independently, either by using pegs to match the answers or other ways to work out the answer like using bottle tops with letters wrote on them. These resources are available in my shop.

Farmer Duck - Phase 2 reading booklet - Duck's to do list.

It is important for young children to have reading material that they can use and read. This booklet is designed for young children to read independently. With this in mind I have not used Capital letters unless they look like the lower case version. The sentences used are very simple and repetitive, Starting with ‘Duck can …’ . To use the resource, I printed it all out, then laminated it before making it into a booklet.

The Three Little Pigs - CVC word intial sound bottle top match

I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. The idea behind this resource is to allow children to match initial sounds to words. When a child is ready to start phonics this is an important skill to allow them to move onto working with full words. You will need an extra resource to go along side this printable. I used bottle tops and wrote the letters on the top. Each card has a picture that they have to think of the initial sound for, they then have to find the bottle top with the sound (letter) that matches. They place it on top of the circle and then it makes the word. With help they can then read the sounds and blend the full word.

Little Wandle revision Ph2 Aut2 letter formation, sentence practice and picture box work sheets

Little Wandle produces some amazing readers. The fact that we are teaching children in Reception what they used to learn in Year 2 by itself shows how fast the pace is. However, this pace is unrelenting and some children really struggle, even if they are involved with interventions every single day, they still need extra support. I produced sheets that I place on my writing table that allow children to practice sentence writing and add a picture to match them. Then I thought that some children need a little more scaffolding so I produced these sheets to help those children practice a certain sound. I also added letter formation practice, knowing full well that four year olds do find this hard. So these sheets include the picture and sounds matching Little Wandle, a picture box for children to draw something (I normally ask them to make this match what they write), a line to practice letter formation and a few lines to write an independent sentence. They have worked really well in encourage children to write independently and of course revise the sounds they are not sure of. These worksheets are for Reception Autumn 2 phonemes.

Letters and sounds Phase 5 'aw' sound peg boards - phonics activity

Phonics should be active and fun. Short activities daily are far better than an extended written activity or a lot of teacher talk. Activities should be designed to allow the children to investigate new sounds. This resource is designed to be a short activity where each child has a different word but the same pictures. They have to read the word and then can place a peg on the correct picture (out of eight) that matches what they have read. If working in a group they can then move onto the next peg board until they complete each one. Or they can be used as an intervention and one child or group could complete them. Initially these were made for a child whose poor fine motor made it hard for him to write but his reading was ok. The pegs were used to aid his fine motor development. But of course, any SEND resources or strategies can benefit many more children within the class. Any child who is beginning to read needs pictures to help form the imagination needed when reading. Young children don’t have that so reading is very much a ‘silent activity’ but with pictures their imaginations will develop until they can picture what they are reading like ‘free readers’ do.

Alphablocks - word family 'un' and 'ug' initial sound game/powerpoint

Children love Alphablocks and they are brilliant at helping young kids learn to read. I have found using these instantly recognisable characters in class help children on their initial journey of learning to read. In this game, that children can access independently on the board, children have the word family ‘un’ or ‘ug’ endings already shown on screen. They also have a picture on screen. They use this picture to make the word. This is done by clicking on the initial sound, and this Alphablock then joins his friends to make the correct word. The game indicates if they make the right choice but also if they have done it wrong. They cannot move to the next picture until they click on the correct initial sound. At the end of the game it then cycles back to the beginning so you do not have to keep getting up to restart it too. Its a lovely addition to your enhanced learning environment during literacy lessons or phonics activities.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears - Goal CVC words independent game - powerpoint

This powerpoint/indpendent game matches the resource I made with bottle tops. The idea is that the child has to click on the correct letter sounds to make a CVC word. The powerpoint is set up to tell them if they got it wrong (a goalie saves the kick) or right, when the ball is kicked into the goal. Words like hot, yum, bed are used for the words that are all phase 2 words (and phase 3 with the y). Children can access this resource independently and is great for anyone who loves football. Reading is a ‘silent’ process for many children. When first learning they do not possess the ability to imagine what the written word is telling us. They have many, many other skills they have to master before they can get there. This resource is aimed at beginner readers to try and put some fun into reading and creating words. The picture cards are double should be double backed so they have a picture on one side that they can make a word to match it or they have the actual word they can copy. With a picture to help young children visualise what they are reading, they have a purpose to reading it too and not just going through the motions. This resource is designed to be used independently, but can obviously be used as a teaching aid too.

Phase 5 Letters and sounds Target words.

This resource includes every word included in the letters and sounds document in Phase 5 on target backgrounds. Each new sound has been highlighted in red so it will help children recognise the new sound within the word. The idea with this phonics game is to have a selection of words usually from the same sound on the wall. The teacher says a word and then the first child to hit the target (this can be with a ball etc, or slapping it with their hand) will win the point. A great way to help with fluency by creating competition within the group.

Again, children can access this independently as it does say when you have the wrong answer or it can be used to model the printed version. All they need to do is click on the correct bottle top to indicate which letter comes next in the CVC word.

Phonics should be active and fun. Short activities daily are far better than an extended written activity or a lot of teacher talk. Activities should be designed to allow the children to investigate new sounds. This is a bundle of phase 5 resources including the majority of sounds from ay to split diagraph u-e. The only one I struggled to find imagines to match was the ‘wh’ sound so this is the only one missing. They are £1 each on the shop so having 18 sets of boards at this price is a good bargain. This resource is designed to be a short activity where each child has a different word but the same pictures.
