HOW DOES TRADITIONAL PE TEACHING AND TGfU DIFFER?
Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU; Bunker and Thorpe) was developed in 1982 as an alternative to the traditional “skills-based” physical education teaching model. The basic foundation of the TGfU concept states that if physical education teachers can improve their students understanding of game play, their skill performance will improve greatly. Some research has suggested that students who are taught using the TGfU model, develop a more holistic appreciation for games and are more intrinsically motivated in activities that involve decision making and tactics.
