These two lessons (which I made for my class when home learning) both contain lots of differentiated practice questions with clear visual explanations. Both lessons have a slide with questions differentiated 3 ways for independent work after teaching. This can printed off or they can work from the interactive whiteboard . I have included the answers so that you can get your class to self-mark or just to speed up your marking process (and save your valuable teacher time!).
3 entire lessons on the formal written method of multiplication that I have used to teach my year 6 class. The lesson has chances for the teacher to discuss and model the method, differentiated practice slides (with answers on next slide so teacher can quick check) and a final slide which can be printed off as a worksheet. While the class are working independently, display the slide with challenge and Learning Objective so that they can complete this once they’ve finished.
I have included the answers on a separate slide which you can use to get your class to mark their own work or just make the teacher’s marking quicker!
Very easy art lesson that will require no planning!
I did this lesson with my year 6 class in 1 afternoon. It gives a brief history of David, his interests and inspirations. The lesson is a very easy to follow step-by-step break down of how to paint a David Hockney landscape. The lesson encourages the children to experiment with colour and perspective. My class produced some really nice pieces by the end -one of which I have used as the example on the slide.
This is a very easy lesson to do last minute! This is a lesson that I have done with a year 6 and year 2 class. It took two afternoons (about 4.5 hours) with the year 6 class. It took us 3 afternoons with the year 2 class because they were slower at cutting out.
The lesson has slides that teach the class about Pablo Picasso, what abstract art and Cubism are. It then goes into a very clear step-by-step of how to make the Pablo Picasso cubist portrait. This lesson is totally adaptable and could be done with collage, paint, found objects and colouring pencils. Please read the PowerPoint notes.
This is a week’s worth of lessons (5 lessons) based on 3 texts/extracts. It contains main teaching sessions and worksheets that are differentiated . Each worksheet and lesson makes the reading skill they are practising quite explicit.
Lesson 1: Looks at a text about Serena Williams and revising looking at the meaning and impact of words on the reader
Lesson 2: This lesson looks at the same text on Serena Williams but this time focuses on the skill of summary
Lesson 3: This lesson also uses the text on Serena Williams and the class have to infer her personality traits using evidence from the text. Practise answering a 3 mark question
Lesson 4: This lesson allows them to read a new text/extract and practise answering a 3 mark question about the character’s personality
Lesson 5: This lesson involves a third text/extract from a Robert Louis Stevenson novel and the children must give their impressions of the house in a 3 mark question.
Here are 15 reading comprehensions that I gave my year 6 class for their Autumn Term homework. I chose these books because they are in our reading corner and I wanted to encourage the children to read them by giving them a little taster.
The Reading Comprehensions are about or the books are:
‘The Explorer’ by KatherineRundell (3 of them )
‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo (2 of them )
‘The Secret Garden’ by Frances Hogson Burnett
‘When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit’ by Judith Kerr
‘Little Women’ by Louisa May Alcott
‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness.
The Importance of Reading (to encourage them to read!)
Malala Yousafzai life story
Marcus Rashford life story
Beyonce life story
Emma Raducanu life story
The reading comprehensions are mostly suited for MAs and HAs but could definitely be given to some of your higher LAs. The style of questions involve a range of skills that come up in SATs papers and I have also included the answers at the bottom of each document to make it quicker to mark.
These four year 6 lessons (both on long division with some short division for your Lower Attainers) contain lots of differentiated practice questions with answers. All the lessons feature a final printable differentiated slide which can be used for independent work; if you want to save paper, the students can work from the board. I have included the answers for the independent work for both lessons to save our valuable teacher time!
These two lessons include PowerPoint slides with starters on square, cube numbers and factors. They then move onto differentiated practice questions to practise plotting points with given coordinates and writing coordinates on all four quadrants. I made sure that I have laminated four quadrant grids for my class to practise on. Each lesson includes work documents labelled as LA, MA and HA (day 2 is LA2, MA2 and HA2) which are for independent work and a challenge question you can display on the board for once they finish. This could be done as a plenary.
Lesson 1 is simplifying fractions which is important when converting 60% to 60/100 to 3/5.
Lesson 2 is converting fractions into percentages -obviously they need to memorise these eventually.
Lesson 3 focuses on converting decimals to percentages by multiplying and dividing by 100. It also includes converting these into fractions too.
Lesson 4 is a revision lesson on all these skills because my class needed one more lesson on FDP equivalents.
In all these lessons, there are opportunities for teacher modelling, differentiated practice questions, a printable differentiated worksheet for independent work and the answers to save valuable teacher time. I usually display the challenge question with the Learning Objective while they’re doing their independent work so they can have a challenge when they’ve finished. Some of the lessons have further challenge questions to stick into the books.
This is a reading unit that I did with my year 6 class over the course of a half term. We would roughly do a lesson in the books every other day and read a chapter a day. Most of the lessons are differentiated for LA, MA and HA.
These 4 PowerPoint (which all contain animated slides) lessons feature plenty of visual explanations of dividing a fraction by a whole number (by finding the equivalent fraction) and also the quicker method. Prior learning recommended: equivalent fractions and putting fractions into their simplest form.
There are lots of differentiated practice questions with the answers of the next slide.
For independent work, there is a differentiated slide which can be printed as a worksheet or the pupils can work from the board (if you want to save paper!).
I have included the answers at the end to save teacher time -why not get your class to mark their own work!
An entire four lessons on algebra (solving equations) that I have used to teach my year 6 class. The lesson has chances for the teacher to discuss and model the method, differentiated practice slides and a final slide which can be printed off as a worksheet. Finally, I have included challenge questions which can be displayed while the children are working independently and that they can complete when they have finished. I have included the answers on a separate slide which you can use to get your class to mark their own work or just make the teacher’s marking quicker!
Four entire lessons on adding and subtracting proper fractions and mixed numbers that I have used to teach my year 6 class throughout the year.
-1 lesson on subtracting fractions
-1 lesson on adding fractions
-2 lessons on adding and subtracting mixed and proper fractions
Each lesson has mental starter, chances for the teacher to discuss and model the method, differentiated practice slides and a final slide which can be printed off as a worksheet. Finally, I have included challenge questions which can be displayed while the children are working independently and that they can complete when they have finished. I have included the answers on a separate slide which you can use to get your class to mark their own work or just make the teacher’s marking quicker! Spread these out during the Autumn, Spring and Summer term!

This is 8 weeks worth of Maths homework. Differentiated mostly for 4 levels (Spicy, Spicier, Spiciest and Scotch Bonnet). The children can choose their own level of difficulty or you can allocate what level they do. I gave one of these to my year 6 class each week of the 8 week Autumn Term (they cover place value and the four operations). The answers are at the end to make it easier and quicker to mark.
The subjects covered are:
-reading and writing numbers
-rounding numbers
-ordering numbers
-negative numbers
-formal written method of addition
-formal written method of subtraction
-formal written method of multiplication
-formal written method of division
I used these lessons on my year 6 class in the Autumn Term. They include :
-equivalent fractions
-converting mixed numbers to improper fractions
-comparing fractions
-finding fractions of amounts
-simplifying fractions (into simplest form)
-multiplying fractions
-dividing fractions
The slides are very easy to use because they contain differentiated practice questions with answers and a printable worksheet with answers so that you can save your valuable teacher time and get your class to self-mark their work!
This is a writing unit that is based on the book by Renee Watson which I taught to my year 6 class. The unit contains 21 lessons but can be extended or condensed according to the writing ability or speed of your class. I have typed out chapter 1 and 2 onto the slides but you will need a copy of the book prior to starting this unit.
Each lesson begins with a grammar starter and many of the lessons contain differentiation and detailed notes.
The entire unit is on a PowerPoint including printable worksheets.
PERFECT FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH or for the end of year 6 (summer term) before they start secondary school.
The writing unit contains diary entries, recounts, writing and analysing poetry and writing recipes.
This is a non-fiction writing unit that I completed with my year 6 class based on the book ‘The Hidden Forest’ by Jeannie Baker. It is roughly 20 lessons but this could be condensed or extended. All on PowerPoint and so easy to follow. Minimum planning and resourcing required!
Each lesson begins with a grammar starter. The lessons explore a range of grammatical techniques embedded into the lesson which your class can use in their writing, perfectly preparing your class to write their own non-chronological reports about sea kelp.
The unit finishes off with a big write that should get edited and published.
This is a sequence of English writing lessons that I did with my year 6 class based on the book ‘Otto the autobiography of a teddy bear’ by Tomi Ungerer. The writing sequence could last for 2-3 weeks or longer. The unit finishes with the class writing a newspaper article. All the lessons before that build up towards writing a newspaper article. We looked at parenthesis, direct and reported speech, analysing features of newspaper articles, looking at witness quotations with drama.
On Word documents, I have included examples of newspaper articles to analyse, the plans we used, a model of the final newspaper article which the teacher can use when doing Shared writing and a template for them to write their final edited piece on. I have also included a newspaper article which is biased and the author is sceptical about whether the events are true or not. I got my higher writers to analyse this and then finally got them to write their article biased as an extra challenge.
Please read the notes on the PowerPoint slides so extra suggestions.
This is a creative writing unit of PowerPoint resources that I completed with my year 6 class based on the book by Nicola Davies. It is roughly 20 lessons but this could be condensed or extended. The PowerPoint slides include many printabel worksheets which hopefully will reduce your workload! I have included a scanned copy of the book.
Each lesson begins with a grammar starter. The lessons explore a range of figurative language, perfectly preparing your class to write their own creative versions of this marvellous book.
The unit finishes off with a big write that should get edited and published.
