I've been teaching since 1992 and I know that what teachers need most are cover resources. Mostly I create 'print and go' cover lessons - standalone meaningful work to keep a class working when their teacher is busy with other things (or ill)

These are my first thoughts about the benefits of teaching translation - I have been developing translation with my classes and most of my students love it - nearly as much as I do!
Please comment if you have any suggestions
Thanks

This lesson is for Year 9 / Year 10 - it is a differentiated paired translation activity. Students should be grouped in similar ability pairs - they have one sheet between 2 - student 1 is the more confident / higher achieving student of the pair. They then work together taking it in turns to write the translation while the other student checks, encourages and thinks aloud all the possible pitfalls of the sentence. The idea is that the students are verbalising their thought processes and working together rather than working individually and not discussing. The Second part of the activity is called Quiz Quiz trade me - students from the same ability group - I have roughly 10 in each group then pick up card same colour as work sheet and then ask someone else who has the same colour how to say in French something from the translation they have worked on. They question each other and then swap cards and find someone else to ask. Ability groups Blue / Green / Yellow - Let me know how it goes!
10 Worksheets covering 10 sections of units of the New GCSE course. Translations written by me using the vocabulary from each unit of the book. Checks knowledge of vocab and practises translation at the same time! Words underlined and in bold also section for students to write what they need to work on.
A selection here from different Units as listed below.
1.1F Ma famille et mes amis
1.1G Ma famille et moi
1.2G On se marie
3.2F Qu’est-ce que tu aimes manger?
3.2G On parle de la nourriture
3.3G Tu fais du sport?
8.1F Moi je prefere…
8.1G On part en vacances
9.1F La journee scolaire
9.1G L’ecole et les matieres
These sheets have 5 or 6 exercises each that progress from very easy practice leading students through practising different tenses. I often use at the start of a double lesson - y9-11 sometimes also Y8 to give students lots to work through and also practising the language. My students love working through the sheets and they also like it when I check through them and they mark them in class. I usually do on a double page of their book (A4) so they have the work and the answers together.
