After the huge success of our printable lesson wrappers, we wanted to make a lesson wrapper teachers could use that would require no printing: a virtual lesson wrapper. This saves time (since no printing is required) and it saves resources which is good for both the environment and the budget. This lesson wrapper is delivered via PowerPoint and features fifty metacognition and self-regulated learning activity slides; twenty-five that can be used at the start of lessons and twenty-five that can be used at the end of lessons. It also features an interactive ‘randomiser’ feature so that teachers can quickly load up the PowerPoint and generate random reflection tasks for the start and end of lessons. The topic of this Philosophy Boxes download is ‘Emotional Wellbeing & Mental Health’. It is one of a series of PSHE-P4C sessions designed for KS2-4 PSHE students. The download comprises a P4C lesson/session that can be used multiple times with the same group. The Philosophy Boxes Method is a new approach to PSHE designed for students in KS2-4: it is graphically stimulating, engaging, and fun. This download is also suitable for older students: but the format was designed with younger students in mind. In this context: ‘Philosophy Boxes’ represents a more student-centred ‘debate & discussion’ approach to PSHE issues. The aim of our ‘Philosopy Boxes’ PSHE sessions is to bring deep, critical thinking to PSHE, exploring PSHE using P4C (Philosophy for Children) debates and discussions. One advantage to the method is that it helps students to practice their social skills through the activities. The Philosophy Boxes Method presents students with a set of ‘mystery boxes’, when a student selects one of the boxes they are presented with 1 of 21 discussion/debate activities (in 8 different formats). The presentation has integrated AfL so that teachers can test knowledge at any point in the lesson. There are 10 different AfL slides to choose from. The design is colourful, animated, fun and engaging: all activities require movement and teachers can decide whether students are expressing their ideas purely verbally or by using post-it notes. The nature of the design is that it can be used for short sessions (5-10 minutes) or much longer sessions (up to 2 hours!) - it allows for classroom practitioners to be flexible and adaptable. The quiz is a simple test that looks for indicators of religious extremism and exposure to Wahhabist Islam (the branch that has become associated with terrorism). If you fear individuals in your school may have issues in relation to religious extremism, this is the test for you. It should NOT be used as a whole school test: this would risk inflaming islamophobia in your school. It should be used with individual students with the utmost discretion and privacy, and only where previous evidence deems suspicion reasonable and rational. The ideal person to administer this test is the school counsellor or someone in a position of trust in relation to the individual student. The questionnaire is a tool for exploring basic attitudes to Britain, Western values, religious tolerance, and extremist attitudes. The odd numbers are all positive indicators, the even numbers are negative indicators ; you should be able to create a total score for a given student if you wish to create data using this test. Ideally, once the test is complete, a teaching professional or counsellor can discuss the students answers and clarify their meaning. Professionals are advised to handle this matter with the utmost delicacy.
