This metacognition teaching resource serves two primary functions: To teach students how to use the metacognitive cycle (planning, monitoring, evaluating and regulating) in relation to essay-writing: developing essay-writing skills To use essay-writing tasks as a way to encourage metacognitive reflection and help students gain metacognitive knowledge: developing metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills The download includes an interactive PowerPoint presentation that can be used for multiple (x12) one-hour learning sessions as well as an accompanying information sheet about using metacognitive strategies for essay writing. The learning sessions guide students through the essay writing process and dedicate time to planning, monitoring, evaluating and regulating the essay writing process. Twelve metacognitive/ self-regulated learning reflection topic options are provided with hints as to what students might want to include in their essays. Aside from metacognition and self-regulated learning, we hope to work with educators towards building greater levels of learner autonomy in students: to this end the essay-writing session instructions also guide students towards developing their own assessment criteria that they (at the end of each session) will use to evaluate their own work. This multi-use interactive learning session explores the greatest questions in philosophy. This lesson is a great way to inspire a love of philosophy; we’ve carefully selected the most significant philosophical questions so that young learners can engage in fun philosophical discussions and debates. This session explores topics such as: The nature and significance of philosophical questions The importance of questioning skills, benefits of critical thinking and ‘questioning everything’ How philosophers go about answering philosophical questions The big question asked in this session is “What is the single most important philosophical question?”. Using a variety of engaging activities students will discuss and debate a wide range of other philosophical questions such as To what extent can we trust our senses? What is the size and location of the mind? To what extent is it possible to directly perceive reality? Since the focus of this session is ‘ultimate philosophical questions’ we’ve aimed to provide a comprehensive range of deep philosophical questions so that students understand the scope of philosophy as a field of intellectual enquiry. Students will also analyse and evaluate an eclectic mix of philosophical claims such as: “Human beings are not free and free-will is an illusion.” “Claims about ‘good’ and ‘evil’ are not claims about reality: they are just subjective opinions.” “It is better to be born into a remote tribe in a jungle than to be born into modern society.” This session uses our unique format for philosophy teaching resources and features an integrated menu that allows teachers to select from a variety of starter, main, plenary, assessment and end-of-lesson reflection activities. With a massive selection of activities designed to trigger philosophical discussions, debates and reflections: you can re-use the resource numerous times with the same group. Aside from a wide range of debate and discussion activities, teachers can also choose from a variety of more substantial activities such as essay writing, poetry writing, and speech writing tasks. This fun philosophy lesson is focused on ‘bioethics’ and explores moral and ethical issues relating to biomedical research, new biomedical technologies, and the field of practical medicine. This philosophy session is of particular interest to Biology Teachers and is designed with the biology classroom in mind; since it explores moral issues in depth, the resource can also contribute to your schools SMSC remit. This session explores topics such as: Ethical vs unethical biomedical research Animal experimentation New biotechnologies such as cloning and genetic engineering Moral dilemmas faced by medical professionals Euthanasia Whilst the session explores some reproductive technologies and their implications (such as the ability for parents to choose the sex of their child), it does not refer to the abortion debate. We felt that this particular topic was not suitable for younger learners and was far too important, controversial and nuanced to be covered in a ‘Fun Philosophy Lesson’! The big question asked in this session is “What are the biggest ethical issues raised by upcoming biotechnologies?”. Using a variety of engaging activities students will discuss and debate a wide range of other philosophical and ethical questions such as: What is the difference between an ethical scientific experiment and an unethical one? To what extent should all people have the right to refuse medical treatment? To what extent is it moral and desirable to improve the human species using biomedical technologies such as genetic engineering? Why might some people feel that the widespread use of cosmetic surgery is morally problematic? and To what extent is ‘Jurassic Park’ a morally problematic idea? This fully resourced lesson is for those teaching Hinduism as a comparative religion at GCSE level. It is the fifth in our seven-lesson Hinduism unit for Theme D: Religion, Peace & Conflict and focuses on Hindu peace activists and teachings about pacifism. It was designed with the AQA Religious Studies specification in mind, but relevant to all GCSE Religious Studies teachers covering Hinduism. The lesson features starters, learning objectives, key-words, key-information, pictures, instructions and information for a poster-design task, AfL tasks, discussion and debate tasks and homework. This download includes: -A full lesson PowerPoint -A comprehensive knowledge hunt, focusing on Hindu views -Instructions, pictures and information for a poster-design task -A detailed lesson plan -AfL tasks & homework The lesson is centered around a poster-design task. All necessary resources to undertake this activity are included in this download (instructional sheet, pictures and information). All included resources are editable. This bundle includes a professionally designed Christmas quiz tailor-made for teachers of French to use with their students. It includes a PowerPoint Quiz with 60 well-presented questions and three A4 Christmas crossword worksheets! Answer sheets are provided. Please note that, whilst the quiz concerns French culture: the questions and answers are (almost all) in English. The crosswords are in English. In the quiz, fifty of the questions are Christmas-related and not connected to a specific school-subject: the final ten are subject-specific and deal either with GCSE terminology, KS4 exam specification contents, or “fun facts”. Completing and peer-marking the 60-question quiz should take the best part of a 1-hour lesson. The bundle also includes a set of three A4 Christmas Crosswords (with answers). The crossword worksheets are Christmas themed, all of the clues/answers are Christmas related. These are ‘Christmas Trivia’ crosswords dealing with Christmas-related general knowledge: they are, therefore, suitable for teachers/students of any subject. This product is suitable for any age-group: differentiation should be achieved by changing team sizes. The resource is fully editable.
