Here is a worksheet that I use when I want to investigate what the children already know about textiles. I use it in their first lesson and they are able to write down any prior knowledge they have on textiles. Its a great talking point about any projects they might have done before.

I have attached a final evaluation template that could be adapted to use in various subjects. I have also attached a helpsheet that can be given to the students to help them write their answers. Both documents are word docs so can be adapted and changed to suit your needs.

An activity I use to teach students about Joe Casely Hayford - a british fashion designer. This activity enables students to make a mind map about Joe as they watch a video about him. His work is covered in Edexcel Design and Technology GCSE qualification Students are required to: Watch a video about him Write as many key facts about him as they can There is also an extension activity where students read through a fact file and add information from there about him. After the activity there is a slide with questions which enables students to discuss what they have learned about him!

I have attached three activities for students to complete. The first one is a natural and synthetic fabric research into properties and uses. Research focusing on Synthetic fabrics. Research focusing on Natural fabrics. I have added the powerpoint and word doc versions so you can edit and amend as you wish. Both worksheets are adaptable to enable students to research all different types of materials and fabrics - you could change the focus on woven, knitted and bonded.

I have attached my whole lesson for the technique of Block printing. This technique can be done with both KS3 and KS4 students I have attached the powerpoint that I use which has a Do Now activity, lesson objectives, examples of block printing outcomes. It then has a slide that has all of the equipment you will need listed and health and safety considerations. This powerpoint also has reflection questions and plenary questions at the end. I have also included a worksheet that students can complete after they have finished experimenting with this techique. On this worksheet there is a a box asking them to write down the equipment they used, the method of the technique and then to reflect on their learning. They also have to think and write down what the advantages and disadvantages of this techinique is.

A worksheet that can be used as a Do Now activity testing the students on the names of the tools they use on this software. I have also included a powerpoint slide which goes over the answers - all have animations on them so they come up one by one. I go over the answers with the whole class and students can peer assess eachothers work. It is also a great way to recap and discuss the main tools they will need to be using in the lesson.

A lesson teaching students about standard components - hooks, poppers, velcro and buttons. This lesson covers what each component does and then goes on to show students how to create a button hole on the sewing machine. It includes a step by step with photos and captions on how to do this. There is also a comprehensive resource included for the do now, how garments use these components and a place to attach the button sample they create.

I have attached my whole lesson for the technique of Hand Embroidery. This technique can be done with both KS3 and KS4 students. I have attached the powerpoint that I use which has a Do Now activity, lesson objectives, videos of how to create 6 different stitches and instructions on how to translate a design onto fabric using hand embroidery. It then has a slide that has all of the equipment you will need listed. This powerpoint also has plenary questions at the end. I have also included a worksheet that students can complete after they have finished experimenting with hand embroidery. On this worksheet there is a a box asking them to write down the equipment they used, the method of the technique and then to attach their sample of stitching. It also has the Do Now worksheet and the answers for the do now are on the main powerpoint.

I have attached a starter activity where I am encouraging students to recognise different bead types. This worked with my KS4 as they were then able to order exactly what type of bead they wanted for their final project as from this they knew the name of the beads they wanted. I have attached two versions of this starter, one in A4 and one in A5 size. There is a word bank at the bottom of the worksheet with the answers which students need to match up. The lesson powerpoint corresponds to this as the Do Now has the correct answers on. This powerpoint also has a contemporary examples of beading and a smalll step by step description of how to do it. I have uploaded the full lesson for you that has a starter activity and plenary activity. Starter Activity Lesson Powerpoint Step by Step worksheets Equipment needed for this I have also included a worksheet I created for a wood joint lesson on Finger Joints to help students make their own sample. This really helped with their independence in the class. I have attached two powerpoints - one has the equipment you need for the lesson and the other is a 2 page step by step (the preview doesn’t show both pages but it is attached). I have uploaded the ppt versions so you can edit this yourself.
