Particle Model Learning Grid - suitable for New GCSE Physics Course (2016)

(0)
This activity is designed to force deeper thinking at all levels, forcing students of all abilities to make links between concepts they have encountered over the course of the topic. This is a highly engaging activity for all which draws on both literacy and content. Each word has a point value ascribed to it, depending on level of difficulty. Students then construct sentences linking as many of the words as they can in a single sentence. They tally up their word score and then move on to producing another sentence. etc. Instructions on how to use the activity with a set of dice is also included. Always ensure that students have access to glossaries or text books so that they can challenge themselves to find the meaning of new terminology or concepts. This is best carried out in pairs, where students can discuss and share ideas. This has been designed specifically for the new GCSE Physics content and has been used for the first time with Year 9 in 2016. Some of the words/concepts include: Eureka Can, Solid, Sublimate, Vibrate, Liquid, Gas, melt, energy, inter-molecular etc.

Power Calculations , Differentiated, Card Sort x 15

Activity Time: 45mins GCSE Power 15 Questions and Answers most of which focus on calculations, converting units and re-arranging equations. Each question is differentiated by difficulty (most difficult have 4 smileys while easiest have only 1 smiley face). The activity focuses on P = E/t and P = I * V - to further differentiate you could supply students with model answers. I usually give different abilities different numbers of Smiley's to collect, so a lower ability student would have 6 while a higher would have many more. There are 3 files in this resource, a colour version, black and white version and the answer key.

Electromagnetic Spectrum Text and Worksheet - wavelength, frequency and properties of EM Waves

Activity Length: 40 minutes Suitable for GCSE students of all abilities. This is a 3 part resource. The first is a comic book style text that introduces EM waves as being transverse and as waves of different lengths and frequency (there is an explanation as to what these terms mean). The second part is a user friendly worksheet, again in a comic book style, where students can use textbooks, video or internet to discover the uses, dangers, advantages, disadvantages, frequency and wavelengths of the spectrum. My students enjoy using the comic-book style textbooks, in particular my reluctant readers and dyslexic students, however, there should always be an alternative source information around, like a text book, to ensure that they are exposed to text of all types. The third is a powerpoint file of the comic book if you should wish to present it rather than printing it. The activity will challenge the higher abilities as they will be expected to apply their knowledge in a compare and contrast activity, while also being expected to produce work that shows a deeper understanding. Keywords: transverse wave, electromagnetic spectrum, light, communication,

Physics "Solve Me" Puzzles, acceleration, momentum, kinetic energy

These activities work best in pairs and I've found that they are very good at building resilience and independence. The students are given the problems and answers, but are asked to show their working out and meta cognitive processes - teaching them how to problem solve and apply their ideas.

Differentiated Kinetic Energy and Gravitational Potential Energy Magazine Project

Objectives: To perform calculations relating to KE and GPE To improve math skill through metacognition activity To understand the relation between Kinetic Energy, GPE and Conservation of Energy. Differentiate through the activities, some of which are simpler than others, or through group work or task choice. This magazine-type activity has always been a firm favourite with my groups. Working in groups or as a longer homework project it is designed to get students thinking about energy in real terms and the importance of correctly showing mathematical method.
