Differentiated resource designed to promote deep learning.
The resource comes with a total of 6 dice,
2 Higher question starter die
1 Foundation question starter dice
2 Forces and motion content die
1 Forces and motion die for struggling scientists
Please scroll through the resources for images.
Instructions
Put students into pairs.
Issue each pair with either a foundation or higher QUESTION STARTER dice and one of the CONTENT dice.
Students roll both die to form a randomly generated question/task stem and content. For example the pair may role “give 5 examples of” and on the other dice “air resistance”
This resource consists of a multiple choice quiz with answer sheet and a link word activity. Instructions on the link word are provided and follow below.
Link Words
Students placed in groups of two and given a relevant textbook. Working as a team, using glossaries, text book, internet etc. students then force a relationship between as many of the words as they can by making coherent sentences with their chosen words…
They can either:-
1. Write an sentence using the two words that clearly explains how they are linked. See examples below
* ___________ is linked to _________ because __________________.
*. ________ is linked to ______ an example is ______________.
*. ________ is similar to ________ because ________________.
*. _______ is different to ________ because _______________.
*. We can use _________________ to ____________ because _________.
2. Simply make sentences using as many of the words from the sheet as possible. To differentiate the task the words carry a number score. A high ability student would have a far higher score than a lower ability student. This forces the higher level student to choose words that have a higher value ie more difficult to make connections to.
Encourage students to use as many words as they can in their EXPLANATION as they will be added to their scores.
For revising convection with Foundation Students.
This booklet prints as a single sheet of A4 paper, but can be enlarged to A3 if you prefer. The activity gets students to describe and explain convection using a range of key concepts and terminology. Please look through the images for examples.
Fully differentiated. This resource comes with 4 puzzles, all identical, but with a varying number of pieces. I have included the images, and text so that you can use them in whichever way you see fit.
This activity is a piece of text on mass and weight that has been jumbled up into a puzzle. I have printed and laminated mine, however I often use paper copies with lower achievers so that the can be glued into their books.
Some ideas on how to use this resource
High achievers - remove 1 or 2 of the text pieces of the puzzle. Students make the puzzle and then have to improvise for the missing piece of text by completing the text using their own knowledge.
Suitable for Foundation Students.
This resource takes the form of a calendar that focuses one topic per day over a period of 27 days. Each day the students have a set of questions to answer linked to a particular specification topic, eg Day 1 is IR Radiation, Day 2 Solids, liquids, gasesetc.

This is suitable for struggling scientists at ks4 or KS3 at any level.
Following the Specification of the new curriculum as at 2017, the lesson objectives are as follows:
To understand the relationship between mass and weight, that mass is a property of an object and how to calculate weight using the equation W=mxg.
The resource has a short introduction to mass and weight and has 2 activity sheets, one for low achievers and another for higher.
I have included the .jpg files of each in case you wanted to put them in any other formats.
NEW SPECIFICATION FOR EXAMINATION IN 2018
Objective:
To understand the function of the different wires in a plug, how a mains cable works, the importance of the earth wire, the difference between a three and two core cable.
Included:
Text, 2 Tarsia Puzzles of different sizes, answers to the Tarsia
Suitable for both high and low achievers.
Approximately a 40 minute activity.
Lesson Ideas:
Give students the text document and allow them time to read and highlight any words they do not understand.
Put the students in groups of 2 or 3 and issue each group with 2 post-it notes.
Students then cut and assemble the tarsia puzzle, matching the question and answer. If students are really struggling, they are allowed to write a single question on each of the post-it notes and then wait for the teacher to circulate and answer the questions.
After the time is up, issue each group with the answers and have them complete their puzzles.
This is a good starter activity for the following lesson, to re-inforce the ideas.
This activity can be used in a variety of ways. Students can be given the puzzle and activity sheets or just the activity. Alternatively the company "pin board" can be used as an excellent revision tool or starting point for notes. Another way in which to use it is to ask lower achieving students to complete an exam question using the board.
PLEASE CONSIDER BUYING THIS AS PART OF A BUNDLE AND MAKE FURTHER SAVINGS.
Included are a piece of text on cables and plugs, a codebreaker activity and hidden message wordsearch.
Objective:
Understand keywords relating seismic waves
Understand the differences between P, S and L waves.
Understand the internal structure of the Earth and how waves travel through them.
Suitable for both higher and lower achievers.
Resource contains 2 x crossword puzzles and answers. Crossword 1 is for higher achievers and crossword 2 for higher students who may need some literacy support.
Objectives:
To understand seismic waves and how they can be used as evidence for the internal structure of the Earth.
To understand seismographs and seismometers.
Suitable for higher achievers (lots of challenge activity options).
This resource is made up of a piece of text summarising key information on P, S and L waves etc. and a set of 5 activity choices. Some of the activity choices are based on Tony Ryan's Thinkers Keys.
I give my students the text and option sheet along with text books if necessary and ask them to choose 2 of the activity options, to complete. This can be followed up by presentation work if you have the time or peer assessed.
A clear and logical support sheet designed to help struggling scientists and those on the autistic spectrum to secure their understanding on how to carry out reflection investigation. I usually just have a set laminated and ready for my students to use. When students have access to the support sheet they feel more confident in being able to complete the work and can work at their own pace. It also promotes their independence as they can achieve more having clear, concise access to the instructions.
Numbered statements and diagrams help students to follow the sequence without having to rely on short term memory.
Diagram 1 shows where to position the normal line and mirror.
Diagram 2 shows how to position the ray-box or light source and to mark the incident and reflect beams with crosses.
Diagram 3 shows how to draw the rays, including direction of arrows and having rays touching both the eye and the light source.
This resource is based on a deep-thinking question matrix and is suitable for all achievement groups. I use it as an introduction to the KS4 Electromagnets topic, but can equally be used at the end of the KS3 topic.
Ways to use this resource include:
Ask students to complete any number of questions or activities of their choosing, with or without text books.
Allocated a set of questions to individual students based on their achievement levels.
In a mixed achievement group, and with access to text books, ask students to have as many of the questions completed by the end of the lesson as possible. I usually put a point value each question.
Suitable for: Low Ability GCSE or KS3
This is an activity designed to reinforce knowledge on the basics of electrical circuits. The keywords have the phonetics in brackets for those who struggle with literacy.
There are 12 key words in total, all with definitions in student-speak. This is suitable as a starter, revision, or as a main activity where students are then required to link some of the key words together in a sentence.
Differentiate this resource by providing students with a textbook, glossary etc.
Challenge students by asking them to choose 5 of the most important keywords and put them in a triangle rank of importance (3 at the bottom), (2 in the middle), (the most important word at the very top).
This resource is a ready to go activity and should take approximately 40 minutes. It focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of using overhead and underground cables. Students complete a card sort and then produce a piece of extended writing. Mark scheme and instructions attached. Suitable for both higher and foundation.
Fully differentiated lesson on Atoms and Isotopes. Includes lesson plan, keywords, workbook and starter sheet. This lesson was judged Good with Outstanding features in a 2013 lesson observation and I've used it ever since.
The A grade activity looks at the link between alchemy and isotopes and challenges students to apply their knowledge in an interesting and unusual scenario.
Suitable for higher tier GCSE Students
Students read through the text on alpha, beta and gamma radiation and correct any mistakes. This is a good deep-learning activity forcing them to think and create their own cognitive links. I often use this in conjunction with a piece of text suitable for the level of the group, dictionaries and text books. It generates a lot of discussion so I would suggest pairing by similar ability.
