Learning Grids - KS3 Forces, Classification, Compounds, Light, Energy

(0)
Included are Learning Grids for KS3 Forces, Classification, Energy, Compounds Elements and Mixtures and Light This activity is designed to force deeper thinking at all levels, forcing students of all abilities to make links between concepts they have encountered over the course of the topic. This is a highly engaging activity for all which draws on both literacy and content. Each word has a point value ascribed to it, depending on level of difficulty. Students then construct sentences linking as many of the words as they can in a single sentence. They tally up their word score and then move on to producing another sentence. etc. Instructions on how to use the activity with a set of dice is also included. Always ensure that students have access to glossaries or text books so that they can challenge themselves to find the meaning of new terminology or concepts. This is best carried out in pairs, where students can discuss and share ideas.

KS3 Keyword Bookmarks - Motion, Electricity, Energy Resources, Planets - Literacy Aid

(1)
Suitable for all students in particular, SEN, EAL/ESL, Dyslexic and struggling spellers. Each bookmark consists of at least 30 key words related to the topic, some with additional guidance and tips. There is also an SEN/EAL equivalent with the phonetic equivalent next to it. Simply print these out double sided and cut out. Then have students glue them in on the TOP, LEFT HAND PAGE of their exercise book, this means that the bookmark will be accessible throughout the the life of their exercise book - photographs of how to do this are included.

Electricity Card Sort

Suitable for: Low Ability GCSE or KS3 This is an activity designed to reinforce knowledge on the basics of electrical circuits. The keywords have the phonetics in brackets for those who struggle with literacy. There are 12 key words in total, all with definitions in student-speak. This is suitable as a starter, revision, or as a main activity where students are then required to link some of the key words together in a sentence. Differentiate this resource by providing students with a textbook, glossary etc. Challenge students by asking them to choose 5 of the most important keywords and put them in a triangle rank of importance (3 at the bottom), (2 in the middle), (the most important word at the very top).

GCSE Physics This activity is designed to reinforce the process involved with birth and death of small stars. Students write a brief outline in the learning grid and then choose the correct corresponding image. It covers the following areas, Nebulae, Protostars, Main Sequence Stars, White Dwarf and Black Dwarf Stars. I always give students access to additional literature such as text books or library books when running this activity.

The Big Bang comic strip and newspaper activity

(0)
GCSE Physics, Big Bang, Red Shift, Expanding Universe, Cosmic Background radiation, microwaves, evidence, theory This activity is designed to get all abilities creating their own learning through comic strips and a newspaper type activity. Activity one students complete tasks in a newspaper style. Activity two, students can create comic strips. Brief information on the Big Bang, Red Shift and Cosmic Background radiation is included in the form of a comic strip (good for reluctant readers). Students then have to produce their own image that depicts the content of each scene, forcing them to engage with the text and personalise their learning. As an further activity or homework, students are given the template for the comic strips and instructed to produce their own more detailed version. Students do not need to be artistically gifted and can use a variety of material to create the images, ie a collage from old magazines, plasticine or even pieces of shaped pasta. The idea is that they think about the information and how they would like depict it, no matter how abstract.

This has been designed specifically for the new GCSE Physics content and has been used for the first time with Year 9 in 2016. Some of the words/concepts include: Eureka Can, Solid, Sublimate, Vibrate, Liquid, Gas, melt, energy, inter-molecular etc.

This activity is in the style of a takeaway menu and caters for all students from level 3 -8. Students are given the Information Sheet and Takeaway Menu. They then choose any starter, main and dessert to complete independently. cressida-bowden takes credit for the solar system cards http://www.tes.co.uk/ResourceDetail.aspx?storyCode=6073029 and the takeaway menu format credit to @teachertoolkit

P2 AQA Equations - HSW Exam Technique

Students match the problem to the correct equation and enter the relevant number on the grid. Students will know if their answers are all correct because all of the rows and columns total the number 39 (see the answer sheet). Particularly useful for those who need some extra help with unpicking physics questions.

Generating Electricity New AQA checklist from spec

This is a checklist adapted from the new AQA physics spec. I use it as a marking aid at the end of the topic and tick off the outcomes achieved. They are then given reflection (D.I.R.T.) time and assessed again. My students are finding these exceptionally useful.

Waves Refraction Diffraction Reflection SOLO

This encourages deeper thinking and can be used with all ability levels. Students cut out the hexagons and put two or three together that they can match eg: REFRACTED and SPEED can be placed together. Students will then need to write how they are linked together ie: When light enters a medium its speed is changed and it is refracted. Encourage students to make as many links as they can. Higher tier students should then identify the concepts that the clusters make. If you need any help with this contact me at @heelismichelle
