I have been teaching English for the last 12 years and worked in three very different schools all facing their own challenges. My aim is to want my students to love coming to their English lessons and involve them in the learning process as much as possible, encouraging them to be independent and resilient. Three years ago I completed an 'Outstanding Teachers Programme' which gave me lots of ideas to enhance my teaching skills. Many of these ideas have been built into my uploaded resources.

Descriptive Writing KS4

A lesson I used with a Year 11 class which asked them to focus on 'zooming in&' to aid with descriptive writing. I found that the catch phrase game worked really well in order to get students to really focus on aspects of a scene in order to provide more detail and focus in their writing, The individual challenge cards also worked well and students enjoyed having their own personal challenges to meet during the lesson.

A lesson with resources to help students independently analyse/annotate/explore the poem. The starter activity involves getting students to look at a wordle with jumbled words from the poem. I would ask students to pick out some words of interest in order to annotate, thinking about connotations/literal meaning etc. Based on this they can make their own predictions about the poem before reading it. The main body of the lesson involves them using a 6x6 grid (they will need dice for this). They should use the square they land on as the stimulus for them to annotate a particular part of the poem/spot or comment on a particular technique used. Students can also write their own questions using the Blooms Taxonomy question stems in order to create higher order questions. They can also swap questions throughout the lesson. (Please note the question stems are uploaded in my free resources.) Any feedback appreciated.

A lesson I have put together for a high ability Year 7 class which challenges them to interpret Act 1 Scene 5 and independently annotate it in a fun and challenging way. This could easily be used with higher year groups.

Writing a formal letter of complaint

A resource that I used with my Year 8 class. It involves watching a clip of 'Holidays from Hell' and then improving an informal letter of complaint. They are encouraged to create their own success criteria but are then given a more challenging one with a focus on use of grammar and punctuation for effect. They really enjoyed it! Feedback welcome!

An Inspector Calls - Collecting Key quotes

(1)
A really simple resource which could be used for a homework. Students asked to collect key quotes on each character in Act 1. I have only used a few speech bubbles around each character in order to get students evaluating quotes. Which are the most important? Which could they easily remember in an exam situation? Could easily be adapted for other acts.

A lesson I used with Year 10 in order for them to practise their 'zooming in' skills when producing descriptive writing. It also encourages them to experiment with structure for effect. Could easily be adapted for any year group.

A 6x6 grid to explore the poem 'Dulce et Decorum est'

I designed this game for students to explore the poem. The idea is that they roll a dice twice in order to land on a square. They then must either answer the question or annotate the word/phrase that they land on. Hopefully this will encourage students to become more independent in their analysis/interpretations.

S&L lesson asking students to consider our initial impressions of Curley's wife. As discussion developed, I gave students some extra info from later in the novella to see if it influenced their ideas.

Who has the most power in 'Of Mice and Men'?

This is a S&L lesson I produced for Yr 10. They were each given a character from the novel and had to decide how their character was powerful. They then had to decide as a group which character had the most power and why.

I produced this resource in order for my classes to write their own questions on various texts we have read. To make it a little more fun, I have given the questions 'chilli&' ratings. Students can write their own questions and then answer each others.

A lesson I used with Yr 10s during which they play a game as a stimulus for a piece of descriptive writing. You will need dice for this! They then create their own version of the game but include language techniques in order to up-level their writing. They can use the Treasure Island text/mark scheme to help them think about what they should be including in their own writing in order to improve.
