A Christmas/end of term lesson for English GCSE language for AQA. Starter 10 minutes define sophisticated vocab Celebrations taboo 20 minutes Word search of language techniques 15 minutes A05 practice 15 minutes Identify four things from the video and discuss 10 minutes AO2 use inference to get meaning from nonsense sentences 10 Minutes Writing puns (AO5) Students write cheesey jokes based on the prompts. 15 minutes. Over the break game where students build on each others activities 10 minutes Team quiz with 12 questions - sorry theres a promise of chocolate for the winners at the end. Plenary match up of the sophisticated words from the beginning.

Question 4 paper 2 of GCSE English language for AQA. The theme is on money and life choices designed for a two hour lesson. The lesson objectives are scaffolded using Bloom’s taxonomy verbs. Starter - statements promoting critical thinking (with answers) Recap - Explode a quote (sample answer) Task 1 - perspective and attitude teaching and 15 minute task Task 2 - Inference about life choices and language analysis extension 15 Minute task but you can allow extra time for class discussion. Task 3 - Analysis of sample answer, students label the answer using terms from the mark scheme. Task 4 - reading of the two texts and analysis (video link as well) Task 5 - question 5 quick attempt Task 5 - Plenary students identify themes and ideas as of being 19th or 21st Century attitudes. A lesson based on the theme of alcohol addressing A01 and general paper 2 questions. The lesson has two sources one from 19th C and one from the 21st looks at attitudes and values. Comes complete with writing frames for students to choose from (questions 2,3 and 4) using PEACE paragraphs. Self/peer assessment included. Plenary consists of a revision sheet that goes over the skills and marks of all the questions across the GCSE English language papers. Lesson is scaffolded with extension activities with every task - everything is timed and should last two hours.

Exam Question Practice - Inference A lesson on a word document on the theme of the attitudes towards drug use. Starter activity - students look at attitudes and decide if they are modern or 19th C. Task 2 - read the texts and state which one is 19th and which one is 21st and see if they can explain why. Task 3 - Students list the differences between the two in a Venn diagram Task 5 - students answer an exam style question following a basic writing frame, with a peer marking/self evaluation table at the end. Extension task - How this relates to question 4 paper 2 - students find the language techniques in the text and attempt to answer question 4 following the writing frame.

A resource called: To what extent? Task 1 - students to think of statements that have some value for debates and they have to explain to what extent they agree with it. Task 2: Students have to provide a counter argument for the first task (to show that complex ideas have more than one side of them (question 5 paper 2) Task 3: Students identify structural and language techniques in a text and then are shown where the techniques are on the next page. Task 4: Sort the techniques into a table of for or against the statement. Task: 5 Students write a PEACE paragraph using a writing frame that is provided. Self evaluation is included in the form of a tick box and students are encouraged to write a target based on this or the lesson objectives that can be ticked off from the first page of the worksheet.
