Estimating Crowd Size with Jacob's Method

(0)
This investigation looks into estimating the size of a large population of objects by taking samples and applying some basic mathematics. It encourages sharing of data, refining methods of collection of the data and discussions about the accuracy and limitations of the method used. Jacob’s Method of counting large numbers of objects involves dividing a given area into equal size areas. Estimate (by counting) the population of one square then multiply this by the number of squares in the grid. What happens if you use different size grids ? How do the estimates compare ? What happens if you take all the estimates in the class and find the range and mean ? How close are they all to the real number ? These and many more questions are laid out on the worksheet provided along with a number of prepared pictures with & without grids for printing or viewing on a computer. Content Teachers Notes An overview of Jacob’s Method and a guide to the Worksheets Estimation Worksheet A guide for the students on how to use Jacob’s Method and record the data. A list of questions for discussion. Estimation Crowds Designed to be used as a starter with the student’s worksheet, it contains 2 crowds of different densities. Pupils start with guessing the size of each crowd, then estimate with a 6 square grid & 24 square grid using Jacob’s Method. **Estimation Samples ** 14 pictures to choose from: crowds, stars, trees, bricks, flowers, balloons, birds in flight and more. Pupils estimate with no grid, a 6 square grid & 24 square grid, and are encouraged to experiment further with other grid sizes of their own. Estimation Sample 3 7 more pictures to choose from, but this time the distribution of the populations are not so even or regular, so its more challenging and opens up more questions. They include a football crowd, bubbles, two other crowds, a shoal of fish and a herd of wilderbeast. In all, lots of examples to practice with & food for lively discussion and critical thinking using basic math and could be taken further into investigating bias in crowd counting. Note: All the documents are printable. To view the sample populations with the grids on a computer you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader on a PC or Mac.

Greatest Common Factor & Lowest Common Multiple

(0)
This pack of resources covers the Math topics of the Greatest (or Highest) Common Factor (GCF) and the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM). Whilst this may seem a small disconnected topic it is actually packed with a lot of Math that includes practice with multiplication and division, factors, factor pairs, prime numbers and prime factors, the distributive property of multiplication, entering numbers into simple numerical formulae & writing numbers with exponents, all of which are excellent preparation for the algebra work they will be facing later on. As such this resource of 9 Sets of worksheets could be easily spread throughout the year to build up the various competences and complement other topics in your syllabus. The core method used in both is listing and comparing so students get lots of great practice with their multiplication (and division). However additional methods have been included that combine with knowledge of other areas in Math and show the connection between the GCF & LCM. Set 1: Factor Pairs Set 2: Find the Greatest Common Factor of 2 Numbers Set 3: Find the Greatest Common Factor of 3 Numbers Set 4: Prime Factorization Set 5: Find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) using Prime Factorization Set 6: Change an Addition to Multiplication with the GCF Set 7: Find the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) of 2 Numbers Set 8 Find the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) of 2 Numbers using Prime Factorization Set 9: Find the LCM of 2 Numbers using the HCF The worksheets are, as always in Jeff’s Notebooks, (almost unlimited), and differentiated. Why have multiple ranges of numbers for each Set ? This offers the possibility for the student to initially focus on the process and aim of the specific method outlined rather than their skills with multiplication or division. However when ready they can move on to a more challenging set of questions that brings these skills into play. So, how many worksheets are there exactly ? Almost Unlimited. At the click of a button all numbers are randomized, so you can create as many different worksheets as you need for classwork, homework, revision, preparing for assessment, fillers etc and the numbers will change every time. These are straightforward no-prep worksheets that require no extra work. Simply CLICK-PRINT AND GO. This makes them ideal to have printed and ready for a replacement teacher if needed. Area and perimeter of rectangles

(0)
This comprehensive range of differentiated worksheets on calculating the area and perimeter of rectangles are organized into sets, each focusing on a specific strategy. Starting with the foundational “Area 1” set, students begin by counting squares to develop an intuitive understanding of area. As they progress, they’ll start to use the formula for area with & without the visual of rectangles divided into squares. “Perimeter” progresses from simple addition to the application of formulas with and without visual aids. The “Challenge Set” requires students to bring together their knowledge of area and perimeter, & the connection between multiplication and division as inverse operations to solve multi-step problems. Worksheet Sets Area 1 - Starting off with just counting squares Area 2 - Using the formula width x length with squares visible Area 3 - Extending Area 2 with larger rectangles - squares visible Area 4 - Using the formula of length x width with dimensions Area 5 - 2 rectangles simply connected with a common width apply the formula total area = width x length1 + width x length2 - squares visible Area 6 - 2 rectangles simply connected with a common width - apply the formula total area = width (length1 + length2) - squares visible Area 7 - 2 rectangles simply connected with a common side - squares not visible - dimensions of the sides given. Perimeter 1 - Find the perimeter by adding all the sides together - squares visible Perimeter 2 - Use the formula 2 x width + 2 x length - squares visible Perimeter 3 - Use the formula 2(width + length) - Squares visible Perimeter 4 - Dimensions given, squares not visible - dimensions given Challenge - 2 Step problems - Either the perimeter or area is given plus the length of one side. Decimal Multiplication - Placing the Decimal Point

(0)
This math resource is designed for pupils to practice placing the decimal point when multiplying two decimal numbers and is good preparation for the work of “Multiplying Decimals with the Standard Algorithm.” You will have 5 levels of Worksheets for pupils to practice whatever method you have taught them with the questions set out horizontally AND vertically. In the first 4 sets of worksheets, the questions are presented in such a way that pupils can see the progression from the multiplier being a whole number, then 10ths, then 100ths. The idea behind this is that at the same time learning the method for placing the decimal point they get the opportunity to see any patterns that might emerge in the numbers produced. Set 1 - Multiplicand - Units 5 x 3 5 x 0.3 5 x 0.03 Set 2 - Multiplicand - Tens 20 x 6 20 x 0.6 20 x 0.06 Set 3 - Multiplicand - Tenths 0.7 x 9 0.7 x 0.9 0.7 x 0.09 Set 4 - Multiplicand - Hundredths 0.07 x 6 0.07 x 0.6 0.07 x 0.06 Set 5 is more of a challenge. Ratio of two quantities

(0)
Year 6 programme of study: Ratio and proportion: Solve problems involving the relative sizes of two quantities where missing values can be found by using integer multiplication and division facts This resource introduces the concept of ratio, starting with sharing a given quantity using the visual support of tape diagrams (also called the bar model), then moving on to word based problems. Worksheets with visual support Tape diagrams (or bar models) allow students to see the relationships between quantities in a simple graphical format. This visual aid helps students understand the structure of the problem and the relationships between the parts to be shared and how the relationships between quantities change when the ratio changes. They also help to develop a systematic approach to solving ratio problems. Worksheet Sets 1 to 3 The initial quantity and the ratio for sharing are given. Students must find the value of one unit of sharing, color in the tape diagram accordingly, then find the size of each sharedpart of the original quantity. You have a choice of 3 ranges of numbers: Level 1: Under 100 Level 2: to 1000 in multiples of 10 Level 3: to 1000 This gives you the choice of starting with small numbers and focusing on the ratio calculations, then later use the worksheets with larger numbers to bring in extra practice with the 4 operations. Worksheet Sets 4 to 6 A further set of challenging Worksheets with the visual aid contain questions giving the ratio & one of the final answers with the aim to find the initial quantity. As with Worksheets Sets 1-3 you have a choice of 3 ranges of numbers to work with. Worksheet Sets 7 to 9 These have a mix of the formats from Sets 1 to 3 and 4 to 6, with the 3 ranges of numbers, and the additional task of determining the width of the tape diagrams before coloring them in according to the ratio of the parts. Word Problems on Ratio Worksheet Sets The two Sets contain a mix of questions including sharing a given quantity; given a share and the ratio, find the original quantity etc as outlined above, (but now without the visual support), plus finding the ratio of two quantities in their simplest form (equivalence of ratios). The quantities in Set 1 are 1 & 2-Digit numbers, whilst in Set 2 range quantities are 2 & 3-Digit numbers. How many worksheets are there in total ? Virtually unlimited … There are 8 Sets, BUT, at the click of a button numbers are randomised, so the questions change which allows you to create new worksheets at the any level for extra practice or revision throughout the year or even give groups of pupils within your class different sets of questions. Answers are automatically generated every time. Note These resources work with the official Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows or Mac computers. Australian Syllabus ACMEM065 - demonstrate an understanding of the elementary ideas and notation of ratio ACMEM069 - divide a quantity in a given ratio

This resource does just that. You have a choice of : Skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s or 10s with ranges of numbers 1 to100 (sometimes 120) , to 500 to 1000 with sequences starting from zero (for range 1 to 100) a multiple of the skipping number a random number This means for example that for Skip counting with 7s, you have 6 choices: range 1 to 100 starting at zero or a random number range to 500 starting with a multiple of 7 range to 1000 starting with a multiple of 7 or a random number … and this repeats for every number to 10. Skip counting helps students recognize patterns in numbers and develop good mental math skills. It exercises number sense and can be useful when counting objects quickly, in that instead of counting objects individually they can be bundled together in groups which helps to speed up the process. Multiplication is often introduced through repeated addition and division through repeated subtraction for which skip counting is excellent preparation. How many Sets are there in total ? 57. The last 3 are Challenge Worksheets where the skipping numbers are mixed up. How many worksheets are in each set ? Almost unlimited. At the click of a button all numbers are randomised, so the questions change every time . Answers are automatically generated. The Teaching Pages, designed for the Interactive Whiteboard for whole class learning follow the same pattern as the Worksheets, and like the Worksheets the numbers can be randomised at the click of a button which means there are lots of examples you can play with. The Teaching pages focus on skipping with 2s, 5s and 10s. Note This resource works with the official Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows or Mac computers.

Year 4 programme of study- Measurement- measure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure (including squares) in centimetres and metres find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares This math resource could also be called finding the area and perimeter of irregular shapes, polygons or compound rectangles. All the figures are composed of 2 or 3 non-overlapping rectangles. This is a natural follow on from the worksheets of Area and Perimeter of Rectangles In each shape there will be one or more side that is unknown and students will have to find its value, either by counting in the case where the figures are on a grid, or calculating where lengths are given, in order to complete the area or perimeter calculation. To find the area, students must first break down the shape into rectangles, and by either counting squares, using the formula for area or perimeter of a rectangle, get to the final answer. There are 6 Sets of Differentiated Worksheets Sets 1 to 4 are made up of 2 non-overlapping rectangles Set 1: Introduction - Find the total area of the shapes shown on a grid, each shape divided into 2 rectangles. Set 2: Find the area and perimeter of the shapes shown on a grid. Students must now divide the shape into 2 rectangles and add them to find the area. Set 3: Find the area of rectangles with a rectangular space inside shown on a grid - subtract one from the other to find the shaded area. These are not overlapping rectangles but show a situation where instead of adding , areas must now be subtracted. Set 4: Find the area and perimeter. No grid. Measurements are given with one or two of them missing. Sets 5 & 6 are made up of 3 non-overlapping rectangles Set 5: Find the area and perimeter of the shapes shown on a grid. Students must now divide the shape into 3 rectangles and add them to find the total area. Set 6: Find the area and perimeter. No grid. Measurements are given with one or two of them missing. Students must now divide the shape into 3 rectangles and add them to find the total area. How many worksheets are there in total ? Lots and lots … at the click of a button the pictures are randomised, which allows you to create new worksheets at the same level for extra practice, revision etc. or even give individuals or groups of pupils in your class different sets of questions. No-Prep Worksheets These are straightforward no-prep worksheets that require no extra work. Simply CLICK-PRINT AND GO. Order of operations is a fundamental concept that provides a common approach to evaluating numerical expressions that include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and parenthesis (brackets) across various mathematical and scientific disciplines throughout the world. It follows a number of well known acronyms outlining the sequence in which operations should be performed: PEMDAS - USA BODMAS - United Kingdom and Australia BEDMAS - Canada and New Zealand Differentiated Sets The worksheet sets are structured to progressively challenge and develop your students skills in this topic: Set 1: Begin with combining 3 or more numbers with addition & subtraction and separately multiplication & division, to help reinforce and extend your students’ understanding of these primary operations. Set 2: We introduce parentheses to show how they affect the outcome of a calculation, again keeping expressions with addition & subtraction separate from multiplication & division Set 3: The four basic operations are now combined in each question, introducing the practice of calculating multiplication and division before addition and subtraction Set 4: Every pair of questions has the same numbers & operations but one has a parenthesis added in, to show the effect of its inclusion Set 5: All questions now have a mix of the 4 operations and parentheses combining all the practice and skills of the previous 4 sets Set 6: A challenge. Students are presented with numerical equations that need a parenthesis to be added to make the equations true. Excellent practice using trial and error and learning to record all trials right and wrong. Set 7: Translating word based problems into numerical statements and solving them. Set 8: Practical, real life problems requiring translation into numerical statements, and solving. How many worksheets are there in total ? Order of operations provides a common approach to evaluating numerical expressions that include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, parenthesis (brackets) and exponents (indices) across mathematical and scientific disciplines throughout the world. These worksheets enable a smooth transition from the basic four operations calculated separately to solving algebraic equations that requires a good mastery of the order of operations. Differentiated worksheets The worksheets are structured to progressively challenge and develop your students skills in this topic: Set 1: We begin by reviewing the order of operations without exponents Set 2: Exponents are introduced into numerical expressions either a mix of addition and subtraction or multiplication without parentheses Set 3: Parentheses are now added into numerical expressions either a mix of addition and subtraction or multiplication and division Set 4: Each question contains all the elements of PEMDAS (or BODMAS) except parentheses using 3 to 6 numbers Set 5: Each question contains all the elements of PEMDAS (or BODMAS) again using 3 to 6 numbers Set 6: Challenge 1. Students are presented with numerical equations that need a parenthesis to be added to make the equations true. Excellent practice using trial and error and learning to record all trials right and wrong. Set 7: Challenge 2. Each question now has 6 or 7 digits and all the elements of PEMDAS Set 8: Challenge 3.
