Year 9 lesson introduction to Surrealism Art movement, lesson powerpoint includes: Art history - how the Surrealism art movement was founded. Artist research - Looking in depth at Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali. Whilst also mentioning the influences of Surrealism such as Andre Breton and Max Ernst. Common characteristics - what visual traits are most common in the artwork - such as subject matter, use of colour, the style of the work etc. This is a guide to help students better understand the work and to give a foundation for how to work in the Surrealism style.

Lesson PowerPoint on Bottle drawing (this is part of the Cubism topic - and does include a singular slide for Picasso and Claesz observational drawing comparison - which can be removed). Lesson focuses on Observational drawing and how to break down an object into shapes. This is linked back to the work of Picasso - as he used observational drawing and multiple perspective in his work, and Claesz who created still life paintings from observational drawing. Bottle drawing is broken down into shapes for a step by step guide and a video tutorial is included (perfect for distance learning). Finally there is a brief evaluation sheet with a few short questions for students to answer themselves to complete a self-reflection of the work. Also includes a step by step instruction sheet with images to guide students with progress on how to draw a bottle.

Cubism powerpoint and topic introduction - powerpoint is focused on research around the art movement but allows students to create a title page for this topic. To begin comparing artists’ within the Cubism movement. Examples of successful title pages included - students should include key facts as well as drawings to create an effective title page for this project.

Lesson aimed at year 7 - links with shape and pattern, even could link in with colour theory. I have used this to discuss pattern and how to create effective work using pattern. Mark making lesson for Year 7 students - this lesson includes: Powerpoint on Vincent Van Gogh - artist research, common characteristics worksheet and how to create a successful Van gogh inspired painting (using texture and line painting techniques) Van Gogh worksheet for creating an artist inspired landscape - to be used for drawing/painting in textures - like the artist. Homework sheet - Van Gogh research and differentiated worksheets for this.

Powerpoint on Wassily Kandinsky - looking at his development with colour emotion theory, followed by a student task for them to create their own interpretations of colour. Artist research and research links to Synesthesia- a condition which Wassily Kandinsky is believed to have had due to his paintings inspired by music - and his quotes on which he could ‘see colours’ when he listens to sounds or music. The main task is for students to complete a Kandinsky inspired artwork based on their current feelings - this is all about self expression and how colour and shape can be used to display emotions. With significant links back to colour emotion theory - and what colours mean to you.

End of year 8 assessment - topics include, Cubism, Artist analysis and research skills, Surrealism, portrait drawing and portrait theory. A good assessment for SOW surrounding abstract, identity or projects centered around either Cubism or Surrealism. Pack includes student assessment (blank) and a teacher copy with answers for marking, assessment layout includes grade boundaries and self-evaluation boxes for students to assess their marks/skills upon return of teacher marking.
