Playing games and having fun is when learning really happens in ESL class. I love to play the game Taboo with my students. ESL taboo is a game that is easy to modify and use with beginners and advanced students alike.
Your students will learn a lot of new and useful vocabulary while playing this fun speaking game.
This ESL SPRING Vocabulary Taboo game includes:
40 different Taboo game cards to create a deck that you will print and cut out for as many teams as you need (black and white + color versions provided). I like to laminate them, punch holes and hook the cards together with a keyring. Talk about years to come of no prep activities!
Game instructions for both beginner and advanced students.
Object of the game:
One player tries to get his teammate to guess the word at the top of a card. The player must give clues, but he can't use any of the Taboo words in his description. The taboo words are those written beneath the word at the top of the card. Teams score points for each word successfully guessed, and the team with the most points wins.

Here's how the game works:
Begin your sentence with "Never, ever have I ever" if you have never done what is written on the card. Begin with "I have" if you have done it.
Other players can react in a variety of ways:
Me too.
Me neither.
I have, too.
If you say that you have done something (and you're not a beginner) you have to tell the story about when you did what is on the card in English.
This is an easy to play 30 minute dice game to practice 36 different regular French -ER verbs in the present tense.
My high school students love this game, and it can get very competitive if you decide to play it as a race (details are explained with the activity).
Students divide up into teams and play a dice game, the dice determining which subject and -ER verb to conjugate in the present tense.

French connector words or linking words help more advanced students make their point and seamlessly transition from one sentence to another. Here is a list of some of the most common connector words in French and English, example sentences using connector words in French and English and 5 fill in the blank paragraphs with word banks. Answer sheet included.
Perfect idea for a "flipped classroom": Send this activity home with your students as homework the night before you want to start working on the passé composé. They'll be ready to start using it the next day, and you can use your precious class time more efficiently.
This lesson is an introduction to the simple past tense (le passé composé). It includes an explanation of when to use the P.C., a review of "avoir" and regular -er, -ir, and -re verbs in the present tense + formation of past participles and how to form the passé composé.
There are links to two of my videos on YouTube (one for the p.c. of regular verbs and one for irregular verbs, but both videos are only for verbs that use "avoir" as helping verb).
This is meant to be a set of exercises to be used after presenting the passé composé with être. For a change of pace (or in case of teacher absence), when introducing the passé composé with être, you could use this set of exercises to reinforce the 20 minute lesson I've recorded on YouTube (it's free: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6-HxU_nIoY). This could make for an excellent interactive homework assignment!
Students will identify which verbs need avoir, and which need être, they'll write the definition of an intransitive verb, they'll list the 17 verbs that use être in the P.C., they'll identify the verbs that sometimes use "être" and other times use "avoir", they'll have to know that reflexive verbs also use "être", and finally they will rewrite ten sentences in the passé composé using être as helping verb.
