A Christmas Carol GCSE Paper Part A

Whilst Christmas maybe over, some of us are still teaching the details of A Christmas Carol to our GCSE Classes. In order to start practicing the exam paper questions with my class, I created my own version of the paper with answers. In this pack, I have included lesson slides that take the students throught the extract using highlighters and questions to help them think about different ways in which Scrooge is presented. I also get the students to rate the quotations they have chosen so they can start thinking about which quotation are better qualities than others. You can use the 'Quote Answers' sheet to guide your students towards the correct points and quotations to answer Part A of the question paper. This lesson and practice paper really helped my students. I hope it helps yours too. Happy Teaching!

Of Mice and Men questions on Chapter 3 with answers

Struggling to teach basic comprehension or just need a competition/cover lesson with an extract and questions? Well, here it is! In order to help my class practice picking out quotations for one mark questions and then picking out two quotes and explaining them for a two mark question, I created this worksheet. It will take the class the whole lesson to get all the answers completely right. The extract I have used is from Of Mice and Men Chapter 3 when Carlson is persuading Candy to let him shot his dog. I have also attached the answers. This is a quick, easy and effective lesson just from one print out.

Newspaper Writing Lesson Pack - Persuasive language

(0)
This is a adapted version of my Persuasive Leaflet Lesson. Instead this is all based around writing newspaper articles. It also has extra resources such as an article to annotate and another lesson where they put their new found knowledge into their own article. (Please see free resources for several newspaper templates, if needed) In this pack you will find two power point presentations that are both on revising persuasive language devices and then trying to find them in an article. (Please note this is an article I have got online and put into a newspaper article format with images)The only difference between the top two power points is one gives the examples and definitions to the class and the HA one asks the class questions to challenge them to remember. To go with this lesson there is the article and a hand-out sheet that the class can fill in when looking at the article. This gives them questions to answer about the article to help them identify the features and devices used in a persuasive article. After the class has completed this lesson, you will want to know if they now can apply their learnt skills to their own article. Please find attached the 'Practising Writing a Persuasive Newspaper Article Lesson' which will give them information (Short video online - not necessarily needed, but link available) and a success criteria on how to write an article. Please see free resources for newspaper templates. This really helped prepare my class for an assessment on newspaper articles. The engaging tops such as homework stress article and too many assessments information got them talking and interested.

This lesson has worked really well with my Y8s and 9s. It could also be used for Y7.

The Tempest - PEE preparation lessons

This power point is great for preparing your class to write an essay on The Tempest. The question that I have focused on is 'How does Shakespeare present Prospero and his relationship with one other character in the first act of ‘The Tempest’? Included are PEE questions, success criteria based on the new 9-1 scale, and a model paragraph on Prospero and Caliban. There are about three lessons in this one power point in order to prepare your students. This lesson goes really well with The Tempest Planning sheet (which can be used to plan their assessment after these lessons). '

Sentence Structure Lesson - Gothic Creative Writing

This sentence structure lesson is designed to show students how using a variety of sentences can create a certain effect on the reader. Here I have used 'The Boy' horror movie trailer to create my own descriptive piece of writing which focuses on building an image using descriptive language and a variation of sentences. Once students have read the description and discussed why this description is effective you move on to watching the trailer (access to the internet needed), and then get the students to continue the original description using the success criteria, trailer, their imagination, and the original descriptive piece of writing for aid.

This is the THE Halloween lesson of the year. In this pack you have a lesson plan with a step by step guide of what you need to do when in the lesson; a power point slide for the lesson; cut out resources and... a booklet to print which is where the students do all the work. (Booklet is file: Handout 1 and Handour 2 printed separately and then copied double sided) This lesson is planned for an hour and looks at persuasive devices with a Halloween theme. All slides are about Halloween and all the model texts focus on the upcoming festival. There is even a fun clip link to tell students the true historical story of Halloween - definitely worth a watch. I know what I'm using for my classes on the 31st October. Buy it now and use it for this last week in preparation or on the day of the BIG event!!! Happy Teaching!!!

How to Give and Analyse a Speech

(0)
In this collection of resources there are two powerpoint presentations that focus on speech writing. There is also a model speech that you can use as an example of good speech writing and structure. When teaching students how to write a speech, I found that it was important that they knew what I wanted, so created this speech on Queen Elizabeth I, as seen attached. This speech goes with Analysing a Speech as it tells students what to look for and then gets them to pick apart their own speeches, identifying what is good in their own. Writing a Speech could be used as a follow up lesson or a preparation lesson before they analyse, as it helps students build a speech. Extra details below: Writing a Speech About Your Contributions to the World is a lesson that helps students prepare a speech in which they take on the role of a famous person from history, and then defend their position in an overburdened hot air balloon. A speech, 'written by Queen Elisabeth I' is attached, that the teacher can use as an example of one of these speeches. Analysing A Speech is a lesson that helps the student first analyse Queen Elisabeth's speech, and then each other's speeches.

Romeo and Juliet Introductory Lesson

This introductory lesson starts with the all important Prologue in Romeo and Juliet. There are several activities that you can do with your students in the power point using the Prologue attachment as well. Then as you continue through the lesson there are PEE structure questions and a model PEE paragraph on the tragedy of the play Romeo and Juliet. In addition, there are some great music links (internet access needed) that will get your students excited and engaged in analysing Romeo and Juliet. I had students from other classes trying to come into my lesson when I played these music gems.

PEE and Assessment Preparation - A Christmas Carol

PEE preparation power point for A Christmas Carol. This Power point goes very well with 'The Little Book of PEE For A Christmas Carol' as it takes students through the question they will be answering and includes PEE structures, model paragraphs, and a mark scheme (Based on the new 1-9). However it also works as a standalone resource, as it goes through how to pick out key quotations in a text, and leaves the teacher room to analyse them with the students.

Stuck teaching your class about structure and language for the new spec? Look no further! Here is a fantastic lesson pack that takes the class through how to answer the following question: How successful is Steinbeck at creating tension when Candy’s dog dies? In this pack you will find a power point presentation that is ready to go, as it guides the class through the extract (attached) and how they should annotate it. It then talks them through answering the question using PEE questions and PEE sentence starters. If that doesn't hit the spot, then wait until you see the two page top mark model answer that can be shown to that class to mark and then get them marking their own. This model answer includes, three structure model paragraphs on this question and two language/language device paragraphs. It comes together to create a full fabulous answer. The mark scheme for this is also included. This has helped my class massively, I hope it helps yours too.

Here are four essay plans for ACC. I created these for my Y11 in the lead up to their exams - they are great for showing students how to look at multiple meanings of keywords and how they are used as methods. Context is added on some of them, but they are mainly for showing analysis. Questions planned in PPT: Starting with this extract, how are the ghosts presented as a catalyst (promote and build up to) for Scrooges transformation? Starting with this extract, how does Dickens present Scrooge’s relationship with his family? Starting with this extract, how does Dickens present the Ghost of Jacob Marley? Starting with this extract, how does Dickens present society’s attitude to poverty? Happy planning!

With only two sample questions from the new spec for Edexcel literature exam on 'An Inspector Calls', I thought I would create a step-by-step guide of how to answer one of these questions. Most of my students find it hard to add context in, and now with a question focused on context the students were finding this difficult. This power point is great at showing the students where to start and how to plan for the question. All the answers come up in sections. There is even a hand written mind map to show the students how they could link all the ideas together. My class found this very useful and have now started to understand how to link theme, context and quotations all together for this question.
