This is a lesson based on pages 12 - 23. This PPT contains tasks that I have either created myself or that I have sourced from FREE PowerPoints off TES. Thank you for sharing your resources on TES and allowing me to create this lesson.

Speech Writing Task. The learner has a speech writing task to complete and can plan and format their speech correctly by using the included speech writing template.

This is a 18 page PPT which is based on the book Hatchet. I created this following reading chapter 4 of the book: just before Brian enters the woods. The class will imagine that they are in the same position as Brian and will write a list of items that they feel will aid survival until rescue comes. They will then discuss animals that they many encounter in the wilderness and the dangers of encountering these animals. Following this, the learners are given a scenario and then will answers 8 scenario based multi-choice questions ( answers and short explanations provided). The aim of the quiz is to determine whether or not they would survive a night in the wilderness! An extension task is provided also at the end of the PPT. a fun classroom activity.

2 X Skimming and Scanning Tasks. This resource includes two reading comprehension sheets with questions based on the source document. The answers are also provided so that the learner can self mark.

Email Writing Task. The learner has an email writing task to complete and can plan and format their email correctly by using the included email writing template.

Letter Writing Task. The learner has a letter writing task to complete and can plan and format their letter correctly by using the included letter writing template.

Quiz and answer sheet provided. Students will try to guess in what decade each song was released. You can add an extension question to see if they can guess the year that the song was released: E.g.* Aqua Barbie Girl 1997*

Skimming & Scanning Lesson. Includes a 13 page PPT on the differences between skimming and scanning techniques. Throughout the PPT, learners are given tips on how to effectively skim and scan a piece of text. Examples and questions are featured on the PPT throughout. Also included: 1 task booklet with a source document. There are nine questions, based on the text, which the students are to answer. Answers are included so that learners can self mark. 1 task booklet with a source document included. Learners are to use the source document to make their own skimming & scanning question sheet. Students will then get a peer to answer the questions that they have created. This would suit High Level E3 and L1 learners.

Directions: Cut out the cards and place them into a hat. Each person picks a card from the hat and acts out what is on the card. You can’t speak, make lip movements or point at objects in the room!

Instructions: Cut out the images on the grid sheet and place inside a container. Give each player a bingo card. As you draw an image from the hat, ask the players to cross them out on their grid sheet. The first player who gets 5 in a row, wins!

Practice questions for E3 learners which are similar to questions they will be asked on their Functional Skills English examination. 1 source document and 12 X questions which are similar to those the learners will encounter when completing their reading test (NCFE & City and Guilds criteria) Answers are provided so learners can self-mark.

An alphabetical order worksheet with answers ( so the learner can self mark). Would suit an E3 learner, as this can be practice as a similar question will feature in their Functional Skills assessment.
