A range of activities I have created for a child in my Year 5 English group who is working below expectations. I am sharing them all in one place in case they are useful for anyone else. A poster/ help sheet for children that looks at the six key relative pronouns and when and how they should be used.

Extracts from all seven Harry Potter books with three sets of differentiated questions attached with each extract. These activities will help children work on a range of comprehension skills using a story many are already aware of and engaged with. A spelling test based on words from the Year 5/6 statutory spelling list. There are 20 spellings used in sentences to try and replicate the Year 6 spelling test, with the answer page being used by the adult to read out the spelling.

A set of simple worksheets that gets children to work on aspects of grammar in various ways. Included are verbs, nouns, modal verbs, adverbs, adjectives and abstract nouns.

A spelling mat that includes all the words from the 3/4 list and 5/6 list on one page. Useful to laminate and leave on tables for children to use so that they can ensure key words are spelt correctly, particularly in Year 6 with the writing framework.

A fully planned and resourced set of 11 lessons for being able to write a diary. The planning is based on Lila's journey in The Firework-Maker's Daughter but most of the resources are easily adaptable to use for other diary writing units. Included are all the lesson presentations, resources and planning required as well as a fact file that children can stick in their book at the start of the unit.

Three differentiated resources used with Year 5 children to work on antonyms and synonyms. The first activity requires children to find five antonyms and five synonyms for each word listed. The second activity begins with a similar activity to the first activity, before moving on to a passage where children have to replace the underlined words with synonyms. The third activity starts with an activity where children have to replace the underlined words with synonyms before moving on to a passage where they have to pick out words they can replace with synonyms.

A collection of free worksheets linked to grammar and punctuation for Year 5/6.

A word mat originally created to help children use linking adverbs of time in their instruction writing. Useful for children to have in front of them for their writing to give them different examples of time adverbials that move a sequence of events on.

A worksheet that gets children to focus on subordinating conjunctions by getting them to identify the subordinating conjunction being used in each sentence.

Three differentiated resources that focus on direct speech and being able to punctuate it accurately. These sheets are made with mastery in mind, taking elements of the mastery approach to Maths and applying these to English. A word mat/ poster of generalisers and how they can be used in sentences to help with writing in information texts to help children who may struggle for ideas.

Three Year 5 grids for below, at and expected standard for writing. These have been based on the national curriculum expectations as well as using the current interim Year 6 documents as a starting point for creating them.

Three differentiated reading comprehension activities based on an extract from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Each differentiated resource includes 10 questions with answers also included.

34 different questions for Chapter Two of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl that test a range of skills. These can be used for guided reading sessions or to give children as activities to support guided reading sessions/ whole class reading comprehensions. The questions follow the order of the chapter but don't have answers attached as the answers can vary depending on the child's opinion.

A presentation that includes 145 past questions that can be used as a revision tool for Year 6 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling or that can be used to pick and choose from for starter questions in English sessions. Questions are taken from the sample paper as well as the 2016 and 2017 paper. Easily usable as talking points with children practising a question at a time before then discussing the answer and why that is the case.
