This is the second half of the unit I'm currently doing with my year 7 groups. The first half required them to work on their writing skills. My intention here is to introduce them to various forms of poetry by showing a few examples and then having them create their own poems. Can be adapted and changed as needed.

8 introductory lessons to the skills required for the Eduqas English Language Component 2A (Reading) exam (19th and 21st century non-fiction texts). These lessons are mostly based on the Eduqas English Language Book 1 text, and are meant to compliment activities and information within the text.

A resource with a series of lessons based around a whole class reading of Louis Sachar’s novel ‘Small Steps’. This is only ‘part one’ of the complete unit, going from an introduction where students watch the film HOLES and discuss (Can do a S&L assessment), and then introduce the novel and read Chapters 1 - 7, with comprehension questions and empathetic writing tasks. I will continue to upload as I create the unit.

The rest of the 'lessons' created for my top set study of Never Let Me Go. Again, don't be scared off by number of 'lessons'. Most of the PPTs are focusing on one chapter at a time, so you may find you use two in a lesson, depending on how much debate and discussion you have.

A few tasks that I've set for prep for the AQA Media Studies exam on Crime Drama. Apologies in advance for any errors on the slides -- sometimes I don't catch all my mistakes.

A resource with lesson presentations and activities for My Year 8 unit on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Students work towards an essay assessment, which requires them to analyse how Scrooge changes after each visit by the ghosts. I&'ve updated these lessons recently (Nov 2010) to be a little clearer and easier to follow. The assessment task sheet is also better (in my opinion). Enjoy :) Also, I&';ve saved them as PPTs in the 97-2003 format, so that those not working on Vista/7 can access (I hope!)

A few lessons that I've put together as an end of year study of poetry - poems are quite random, but are ones that I enjoy personally and feel are accessable to KS3 students.

The second part of lessons, for my unit on descriptive writing. The assessment involves students creating a piece of descriptive writing about a homeless person in a big city (Cambridge specifically here, but you can change this). I am currently using with my year 9s, but will likely adapt to use with year 10s as well, in terms of producing descriptive writing coursework. Could also easily be changed to aid in narrative writing, if you tweaked it.

The following are all of the lessons that I created for a SOW centered around a whole class reading of The Ghost of Thomas Kempe. Focus is on getting students used to writing PEEL paragraphs. . End result is a reading assessment looking at how tension and suspense are built in the prologue.

I've created three mock Literature Exam style papers for practicing exam skills with my top set year 11 group. Having no past papers to go from thus far, they're just my attempt to give the students a 'realistic' feel for the types of questions they may experience. Feel free to adapt and change.

The focus of the unit is around issues of homelessness, so accompanying the unit is a class reading of Robert Swindell's novel ‘Stone Cold’. The assessment, however, isn’t on ‘Stone Cold’, but is on a creative writing piece, that uses description (so not narration) to describe a homeless person in Cambridge (but this can be changed to any city or town, really). The novel is merely being read to them so that they can use it to help them feel empathy etc. I have shown my groups clips from the film ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ as well, to help get their minds working about issues of homelessness.

This download contains the most recent version of my KS3 conflict poetry SOW. The poems themselves are not included, but they are very easy to find online, for free, or in older (and in some cases current) GCSE poetry anthologies. These lessons are suitable for any KS3 class, although I use them to familiarise students with GCSE skills re: poetry analysis and comparison.

The rest of the resources for my optional end of year study of poetry. I've also included a few random writing activities, which I don't think will take up a whole lesson.

This download contains an entire half-term’s worth of work on poetry from other cultures. The poems themselves are not included in the download, for copyright reasons, but you can easily obtain these yourselves - many are taken from past GCSE poetry anthologies. This scheme of work is fully resourced, including any relevant worksheets and examples needed for each lesson. Suitable for any KS3 group, not necessarily Y8 (which is what I originally created it for).

This was an activity that went over really well with my year 9 students. We read Poe’s poem ‘The Raven’, watched the Simpsons version, and then the students were asked to create their own dramatic performance of the poem, which we recorded and screened. Took two lessons.

I initially created this to fill a cover lesson, during an absense. It’s a fun activity to do with KS3 students, to get them to warm up to the idea of producing poetry, without the pressure of writing it entirely on their own. It requires old newspapers, scissors, and glue. Details are all contained in the PPT, which acts as a lesson plan.
