Print on A4 card, single-sided. Developmentally early level but useful for children with learning difficulties.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Three social stories about frequent problems. Print 2-up on paper to make stories to discuss. Although designed for a child with a social communication disorder, the stories can be used for general discussion within the PSHE orbit.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Print the NOTES as a sheet for reference. There are several suggestions, including how to use the resource with a mixed ability group with readers and non-readers. Print the MAKE QUESTIONS AND STATEMENTS on card. The little cards will be more manageable if you use full size A4, but they are legible if you print 2-up. Basically it is an activity requiring rearrangement of word cards to make questions or statements but there are other ideas in the guide too.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Print the games sheets on A4 card. You can print the first page of suggestions on the back of one of the lotto boards or on a separate sheet. Cut the sheets which are filled with small pictures into cards for the suggested games (see suggestions page and notes on the sheets). You can play Lotto arranged as a grid, Pairs, sorting into the sort boxes, and use the discussion ideas.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. The BABY GROWING BOOK can be printed 2-up on A4 paper. It attempts to show the approximate developmental sequence of the baby’s first year and can be related to photos the children bring in for the topic. The BABY SEQUENCE CARDS have notes on page 1, a large year symbol of the seasons on page 2, and cards to cut and match/sequence on pages 3 and 4. Print the file on A4 card, 2-up.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. Reading a new word is greatly helped by spotting how many syllables it is likely to have. Establishing that syllables have at least one vowel letter (and what the vowel letters are) will help. The single-sided file VOWEL LETTERS INC. Y is to reinforce the fact that letter-y is sometimes a vowel letter. Print the file LOOK, SAY AND BEAT SYLLABLES double-sided on A4 card. Suggestions for working through the files are included.

Suggestions on the first page for use to make a barrier game to practise comprehension and expression, Lotto and Pairs. Children who use Makaton are likely to know the signs for these words. Print the games pages on A4 card for a reasonable size.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. The MAKING A CAR story can be printed 2-up on paper. It is fairly repetitive and easy to read with some symbol support. It relates to the curriculum early learning about how wheels help things move. Plenty to discuss from the bossy friend to polite requests. WHEELS VOCABULARY page shows related pictures and gives more discussion suggestions. Print this A4 size to keep in a vocabulary folder for revision and use in odd moments.

Just for reading, you can use paper but there are additional activities described in the NOTES which would be easier with the story on card for strength. Designed to provide modelled short sentences for a child to use. Possibilities for making a good barrier game in the notes with EXAMPLES OF FOAM PICTURE photos as a guide.

You can build up a useful long-term resource by adding a vocabulary page for every new topic. Could also be used for EAL.
