There are some buildings children will be familiar with and others they will less likely to be familiar with. There is a sheet showing all 12 structures in colour and in black and white. Children can name the buildings and write over the words as well as colour and match the pictures. The flashcards make a lovely wall display or you could hang them around the classroom like bunting.

Press the mouse / switch to see the door disappear and all is revealed. There are 20 doors to knock and pictures to find. Add sound effects or use instruments for the knocking and big reveal. There is a grid with the 20 numbers for children to write or draw what was behind each door. There is an answer grid which tells you what picture is behind what number door. You could also print off the pictures and children can find and match them to the screen as you show the PPT.

Children enjoy this task where they closely observe the picture which shows 20 things beginning with a P at Christmas time. Children can work in pairs or groups or as a whole class. There is a word grid where they can tick off the pictures they find. They could also match the colour pictures to the main one. These can be cut into cards or left as a board. The next sheet shows the 20 pictures with words underneath. The final sheet is for children to write the words underneath the pictures. Children can tick off the things they find. There are 10 things to find. There is a page of simple riddles that go with each picture and provide clues. You can choose to use these or not depending on your children and their abilities. Use real objects if available for your scavenger hunt, or soft toys e.g squirrel and snowman. Alternatively, or as well as, cut out the large flashcards, laminate and tie/tape these up around the outside area for children to find. Finish with the hot chocolate and then you may want to reward your class with the real thing as a treat for finding everything on the scavenger list.

You could discuss a few examples before the children carry out the activity. The aim of the game is to identify the pictures and then sort them into the seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Some pictures may fall into more than one category such as sun cream - Spring and Summer. Children work in pairs or teams to identify the pictures and sort. They can use the grid template provided to write their answers on either write the season or/and what the pictures show. Alternatively, cut out the pictures and children can sort them under 4 headings. Sheet 3 is the answer sheet, although children may come up with plausible alternative answers of their own.

A differentiated resource for your work on Weather or Seasons.
