The Railway Children Chapter 6 SATs style comprehension (with answers)
This resource includes an extract from chapter 6 of 'The Railway Children', a comprehension paper based on the extract which is set out in the same style as the Key Stage 2 Reading SAT, the mark scheme and a grid showing the coverage of the content domains across the questions.
Each of the questions follows the same format as those found in the 2016 and 2017 KS 2 Reading SATs so that children can become familiar with the ways in which questions are worded.
The resource can be used as a stand alone practice comprehension for the KS 2 SATs or could be used as part of a novel study of 'The Railway Children'.
Mog the Forgetful Cat KS 1 SATs style comprehension
This is a KS 1 SATs style comprehension paper to accompany the book ‘Mog the Forgetful Cat’ by Judith Kerr. Children will need a copy of the book in order to complete the comprehension. The questions follow the format and layout of the KS 1 reading SAT. Included is the mark scheme for the questions again following the format of the KS 1 reading SAT. The mark scheme also identifies the target content domain for each question.
The questions will be suitable for children in years 1 & 2.
The Diary of a Killer Cat by Anne fine - Reading and Comprehension Activities
This PDF booklet contains notes and resources to support the teaching of reading and comprehension of Anne Fine's The Diary of a Killer Cat. They are designed for year 3. There are 7 guided reading notes (one for each chapter) and these are clearly aligned to the content domains and the national curriculum for English. The guided reading notes focus on developing children's inference skills. There are worksheets to help develop inference, sequencing, character analysis and point of view. In addition there are a number of related drama activities which help develop children's reading with expression and inference skills.
The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith Comprehension and Reading Activities
This is a 34 page PDF document containing the notes and resources for comprehension and reading activities relating to Dick King-Smith's The Hodgeheg. There are guided reading notes for each chapter, guidance for drama activities to develop children's understanding of character, differentiated worksheets to develop inference and justifying opinions with evidence and two crosswords to develop the skill of working out the meaning of words from the context.

This is a 37 page PDF containing a range of activities and resources to support the teaching of reading and comprehension of Esio Trot by Roald Dahl. The activities are suitable for year 3 and some year 4 pupils. They include: 7 guided reads, 5 crosswords for vocabulary development, 2 sets of differentiated activity sheets for character analysis, activity sheets to explore plot structure and summary and activities to develop reading with expression. There are also suggestions for wider reading. Each of the activities are aligned with NC 2014 to enable tracking and the collection of evidence.

This 31 page PDF contains activities and worksheets designed to develop children's comprehension of Cool as a Cucumber by Michael Morpurgo. The book and the activities are suitable for children in year 3. There are 5 guided reads (one for each chapter), 4 crosswords to develop the skill of working out the meaning of words from the context, worksheets 4 sets of worksheets (2 of which are differentiated), a Writing a book Review word mat and suggestions for drama activities which develop inference and understanding of character. There is also a list of wider reading to promote children's reading for pleasure.
A Candle in the Dark by Adele Geras Comprehension activities and Guided Reading
A Candle in the Dark by Adele Geras is a short historical novel set just before the beginning of World War II. It follows two young Jewish refugees as they escape Germany on the Kindertransport.
The pdf booklet provides a range of different activities to develop the comprehension of pupils in years 5/6 including, freeze frame, hot-seating, character on the wall.
There are detailed guided reading plans for 4 of the chapters which are Word documents enabling editing.
There is also a PDF which is a SATs style comprehension paper for the final chapter.
Each of the activities is cross-referenced to the end of Key Stage 2 statements for reading to facilitate the gathering of evidence for end of Key Stage 2 Teacher Assessment of Reading.
Little Manfred by Michael Morpurgo: Questions for whole class and guided reading (with answers)
This 14 page PDF is a bank of questions to promote discussion and develop pupils’ comprehension of Michael Morpurgo’s Little Manfred. The questions can be used for whole class reading or small group carousel guided reading. The questions have been differentiated so that teachers can select which ones to use with different groups of children. Each question has also been cross referenced with the Key Stage 2 content domains for reading. Answers have been provided for each question to save teachers’ precious time.
Horrid Henry and the Football Fiend - Guided Reading, SATs style Comprehension, Vocab (with answers)
This is a bank of questions for guided reading (whole class or carousel) to support the reading and comprehension of Horrid Henry and the Football Fiend. This is a 48 page PDF document. It contains a variety of comprehension activities for the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. There are activities and worksheets to develop the skill of working out the meaning of words from context, including a crossword for each chapter; understanding and analysing character; prediction; text structure and analysis; summarising the text and 3 differentiated comprehensions for the final chapter which focus on inference. In addition there is a set of guided reading questions for each chapter. All of the activities, worksheets and guided reading questions are cross referenced to the criteria identified for Key Stage 2 reading assessment for ease of tracking. There is also a list of related books to encourage ‘reading for pleasure’. The booklet is designed for years 3 and 4.
