Converting miles to kilometres - an introduction.

This resource has a set of cars with conversions between miles and kilometres that you can print out and can be stuck in books as reminders. There is also a quick check set of 5 questions with answers. This resource works well with converting units of measurements miles to kilometres game and the converting miles to km PPT. I have put these into a bundle and used them as a whole lesson.

Instructions Use these resources to teach your class about converting from miles to kilometres. Print, cut out and laminate the conversion matching cards. You can attach these to lolly sticks if you like. Keep the miles cards and hide the kilometre cards around the class or yard. Give the children a little Porsche each with reminders about converting miles and kilometres, and they can stick it in their book. Then show the children the ‘Converting miles to kilometres’ Powerpoint and help them to convert the measures. After this, give the children the 5 quick check questions which they answer on the sheet and stick in their book. If they understand how to convert, then give them the miles to km table to stick in their book, or have on a clip board. Also, give the group the miles cards. They must look at the miles and convert it to km, then run and find the card which matches their answer. They continue with this until they have all of the cards matched up. Then they check with the teacher and mark their answers. I hope that your class have fun with this activity—my class really enjoy active Maths sessions. The Tiki Teacher 2017

In this resource their are pictorial representations of numbers up to ten million in place value grids. The pupil has to either draw the representation of a digit or write the value of each digit. They also have to write the total for each place value grid. There is an information sheet to show examples and explain what to do. There are 9 grids with answer sheets.

This document has a set of 8 word problems ( with answers) which involve finding percentages of amounts. It supports Reasoning and Problem Solving for Year 6 - Spring Block 2 - week 3 and 4 - WRM. It has an Easter theme. I also have the same numbers used in a set of problems with a Spring theme for the children in your class who do not celebrate Easter, or if you come to this at a different time of the year. I use these two sets of problems in the same lesson. Document comprises: 8 word problem cards and a set of answers. If you would like these problem cards with a different theme for a different time of year or topic, please message me on Facebook or Twitter - TheTikiTeacher. Thanks.

Winter reading challenge for holidays

This reading challenge could be undertaken by children of any age. I have taught in Key Stage 2 for 22 years. The children choose 10 different reading activities to achieve over the holidays, they can even make up their own. When they have achieved each task, they cut out the relevant snowman and stick him on the wintry scene. When they return to school after the holiday, they are rewarded for their hard work. I have been using reading challenges for the past 4 years in my class, with great success. They give a real purpose for reading. We have a school reward and a treat such as hot chocolate with marshmallows and squirty cream. It works well! We also have a Spring Challenge in the Easter Holidays and a Summer Challenge given to my next class to complete before coming into my class in September.

These sheets support WRM - Varied Fluency for Year 5 - Spring 1 week 1-3. There are two worksheets on long multiplication using standard written method (with answers). When the children have completed the questions, then they can cut out the character (shark) and stick it in their book or on a card to collect different characters. I have made this with a sea theme as my topic this term is Blue Planet. If you would like to have the same sheets with a different theme, please contact me on Facebook or Twitter - The Tiki Teacher.

This reading challenge could be undertaken by children of any age. I have been teaching in Key Stage 2 for 22 years. I give out this homework on the day before the holidays when I meet my new class for September. The children choose 10 different reading activities to achieve over the holidays, they can even make up their own. When they have achieved each task, they cut out the relevant scoop of ice cream and stick it on a cone. 2 scoops on each cone. They can decorate the ice creams with sprinkles, cherries or flakes. I have been using reading challenges in my class for the past four years, with great success. They give a real purpose for reading. We have a school reward and a treat - obviously ice cream or ice lollies work well. We also have a Winter and a Spring Reading Challenge for these longer holidays.
