Earthquakes - factors affecting impacts

This lesson contains differentiated resources for pupils to understand the significance of factors affecting the damage done in an earthquake. Pupils start by guessing the magnitude of an earthquake from the magnitude and a photo. This is to get them thinking about the role of magnitude in fatalities. Pupils then create a hypothesis to predict the relationship between magnitude and fatalities. There is data and a graph outline (for lower ability pupils) to draw a scatter graph to see what the link is. Pupils then think about the other factors that affect earthquake impacts and create a significance star to show which factors they think are most important. They then write a paragraph to justify their decisions. Lastly there is a post it note based plenary so that you can assess their understanding.

A task to assess pupils understanding of different biomes. They choose a climate type and then select 7 things they would need in order to survive in that climate. Pupils must demonstrate their understanding of the biome by explaining why each item would be important. The sheet includes a what went well and even better if marking grid so that the work can be self or peer assessed. It works really well as a consolidation homework.
