La casa nunca está lo suficientemente limpia para Bernarda. Ordena repetidamente al personal que vuelva a fregar todo, que blanquee el patio nuevamente y que limpie las huellas desordenadas dejadas por los extraños en la casa una y otra vez. El blanco es el color que simboliza todo lo que Bernarda quiere en su dominio (pureza, virtud, clase, estatus, etc.); por el contrario, su obsesión por mantener su existencia en la casa hace que el color blanco sea un recordatorio simbólico de cada fracaso tanto de ella como de sus hijas.
