AQA GCSE History lesson from the Reform and Reformers section of the Power and the People unit.
In this lesson we look at what New Unionism is and begin by looking at two strikes. The Match Girls’ strikes of 1888 and the London Dockers’ strikes in 1891. We compare the strikes and evaluate their success. We then contnue to a short source extract practice question on the strikes. The pupils then examine a longer extract about the impact of New Unionism to evaluate how successful the movement was at gaining control over their employers and from the government. Included is:

Key Stage 3 lesson looking at the murder of Thomas Beckett in 1170. The lesson has a focus on causation with the pupils looking at long-term, short-term and trigger causes of his murder. The lesson includes an image source starter with questions. We then watch a video clip and the pupils complete a question sheet. We then look at how to identify short-term, long-term and trigger events before applying this to the case of Thomas Beckett. We then complete an extended writing task where the pupils write a report to Pope Alexander detailing the causes of the event and who is ultimately reposnsible for Beckett’s death. Included is:

AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the Nigeria: A Newly Developing Economy section. The lesson is roughly one hour long but can be extended or shortened. We start by considering what quality of life means with a starter task. We then complete an activity which looks at how an improving economy can improve quality of life. We then move onto a skills task which involves the pupils plotting out indicator data for Nigeria and determining what this shows about quality of life in the country over the last 30 years. The pupils complete and extract task on whether all Nigerians have experienced better quality of life then complete a diagram to show what barriers to improving this are still to be overcome. We then conclude with a 6 mark GCSE style question with some guidance for the pupils if they need it. Included is:

The Lesson needs the Oxford AQA GCSE Geography textbook
The lesson is roughy one hour long, but can be extended or shortened, The lessons starts with an annotation exercise on an image of slums in Lagos. The pupils explore the environmental problems in the image and potential causes and solutions. We then take a short look at a video clip of an illegal oil extraction operation in the Niger Delta and asked how rapid developemnt may have led to this. The pupils then move onto an A3 information gathering task usingthe Oxford textbook. The sheet is differentiated with a variety of tasks. We then finish the lesson by attempting to answer a 6-mark question on environmental issues with guidance and structure if the pupils need it. Included is:

AQA GCSE Geography Lesson for the Nigeria: A Newly Emerging Economy unit. The lesson is at lest one hour long, but is easily extended into two lessons. The lesson begins with a photo interpretation starter to introduce the pupils to some of the poverty in Nigeria. We then look at two families in Nigeria, the pupils investigate their living conditions and access to safe water, sanitation and electricity before deciding if the family would benefit from aid and if they represent the majority of Nigerian families. We the look at the benefits of International Aid and the reaons why aid may not be used effectively. We use a GCSE-style question to investigate the latter. Included in the lesson is:

We start with a source question on the Copenhagen Fields Protest March. We then look at who the Tolpuddle Martyrs were and why they were transported. The pupils watch a video clip then read the information sheet. The main task is constructing a movie poster on the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. The poster is divided into sections and involves several skills such as summarising, describing and evaluating as well s being creative! There are some extension questions on the significance of the Tolpuddle Martyrs to finish the lesson off. Included is:

Lesson on significant factors in the fight for women’s rights after the second world war. The lesson will probably cover two hour long lessons, but can easily be shortened. We start by looking at the Ford Dagenham strike in 1968, we look at why the strike happened and what it’s impact was. We them create a chart of importance using other significant events since WW2. The pupils then complete a Wheel of Life for all the lessons they have completed on women’s rights so far and finish by answering a question on which factors were the most significant using a writing frame to help them. We start with a photo showing an illegal crude oil refinery in Nigeria and discuss what this reveals about he country and its natural resources. We then look at Nigeria’s political links to other organisations such as OPEC and the United Nations. We ask which of these are most significant to Nigeria’s development. We then look at Nigeria’s two main exports sectors, crude oil and agriculture where the students annotate a text extract to show their understanding. The four we look at are William Wilberforce, Thomas Clarkson, Olaudah Equiano and Granville Sharp.
