AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at the economic challenges in Lagos with special attention paid to the informal economy and the Olusosun Landfill site. We use elaborative questioning on a photo of rubbish collectors at Olusosun as a starter, the pupils may be able to work out that the rubbish tip employs informally, many people. We then look at the employment structure of Lagos, and how it compares with Nigeria. The pupils will be plotting their own pie charts and answering questions relating to them. We then look at the formal and informal economies. Focusing on the informal economy and the Olusosun landfill site, pupils look at the problems and benefits of working on the landfill site, there are 2 video clips to support this. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at how Lagos has grown in the last 50 years and why. We start with a population pyramid of Nigeria and the pupils can choose questions to answer as we explore the population structure of the country. We then look at the growth of Lagos through the pupils plotting the data onto a graph and answering questions about Lagos’ population growth. We then move onto the physical growth of the city. Here pupils use colours to make an isoline map and again there are questions for the pupils to answer. We then look at push & pull factors for rural-urban migration. The pupils create a graph as a visual tool to see which are the main pull and push factors. We finish with an emoji annotation plenary about the reasons for Lagos’ population growth. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we introduce Lagos as a case study for a city in an NEE. We start with the pupils looking at a variety of photo’s trying to work out where the photos might be taken. They are all of Lagos of course, this is to introduce the pupils to the variety, and inequality in the city. We then look an introductory video to Lagos to gauge the pupils first impressions. The pupils then go on to describe to location of Lagos. I use the C>L>O>C>K formula but this can be changed to whatever you like. We then look at some key facts or indicators about Lagos. We compare this to the same key facts as London. the pupils use this information to explain what Lagos is like and what challenges it may have. This allows the pupils to understand how it compares to a city they may well be familiar with. We finish with a GCSE style question on the importance both regionally and internationally of Lagos. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at the emergence of megacities and the reasons for urbanisation. We start with a quick photo starter of Tokyo. We introduce the two concepts of natural increase and rural-urban migration. The pupils have a worksheet to fill in regarding push/pull factors, firstly adding their own ideas, then with some input from the teacher, then they categorise into social, economic and environmental. We then look at megacities, with a introductory video. the pupils then plot the location of the megacities as of 2018 using longitude and latitude coordinates. The pupils then have some extension tasks around their map. We then have a brief interlude to consider what living in a megacity might be like and watch a short clip on Tokyo and living in such a high density population. We then finish with a comparison of a map showing megacities from 1975 and answer a GCSE-style question. GCSE Anglo Saxon and Norman England 1060-87 for the new specification 2016. In this lesson we look at the Battle of Hastings. The objective of the lesson is to determine to what extent mistakes by Harold, strength/skill and tactics played a part in the outcome of the battle. We start with a quick retrieval quiz from last lesson. We then look at who had the advantage going into the battle by comparing armies, battlefield position, leaders and tactics. We compare our judgements with an interpretation and the pupils answer questions based around the interpretation. We then plot the events of the battle on a graph to show who had control at various points, the pupils then annotate the graph to show examples of luck, mistakes and military strength We then pull all the strands together and finish with a piece of extended writing on a 16 mark question based on to what extent mistakes played in the outcome of the battle. We start with a quick quiz on global populations and a video to put global population increase into context for the pupils. We then look at how urbanisation varies around the world by plotting data on a graph. The pupils then describe the trends they have found. We then look at a map of the urban populations around the world and the pupils can tackle several different questions depending on ability. We then discuss how these patterns might be explained. We then answer a GCSE-style question looking at the percentage of people living in urban areas on different continents using a bar chart. The pupils have guidance on how to answer the question if needed. We finish with a plenary quiz where the pupils have to find the countries with an urban population of over 50%. The objective of the lesson is to determine to what extent luck, strength/skill and tactics played a part in the outcome of the battle. We start with a quick retrieval quiz from last lesson. We then look at the events of the battle itself by completing a worksheet and the pupils consider each stage of the battle and answer questions on the event and whether there was any skill/strength, luck or tactics involved at that point. The pupils use the information from the worksheet to create a mind map using factor hexagons. We then pull all the strands together and finish with a piece of extended writing on to what extent luck, strength/skill and tactics played in the outcome of the battle.
