A full lesson based on the new AQA (P7.5) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers activity, count rate and the Geiger counter. Students are then taught how to calculate half life from a graph using examples. A worksheet is then completed (taken from another TES author). Students then complete a simple practical to model half life; they roll small cubes (or dice) and take the cubes that land silver side up (or on the number 1) out of play. Students plot a graph and answer questions relating to the practical. There is then a final grid challenge that students can use to assess their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are incorporated into the sides, timers are used to promote pace. Video used and radiation sickness discussed in order to incite interest.

A full lesson based on the OCR-A SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers meiosis in sexual reproduction and the stages of meiosis 1 and 2. Students are directed to take note of key sections using red font. Students then apply their knowledge to a card sort activity which can be glued to A3 paper to create a revision resource on meiosis. The lesson then progresses to cover ‘cross over’ and ‘independent assortment’ ahead of PP questions and a final reflective plenary. All answers are included into the slides for each activity allowing for self/peer correction. Timers are included to promote pace.

A full differentiated lesson based on the new AQA (B7.5) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson covers what alcohol is, how it is absorbed and how it effects the brain and liver. A data exercise, graphic images, news articles and celebrities are used to incite and maintain student interest whilst promoting relevance. A differentiated question grid is then used to apply learning/conduct AFL. The lesson then progresses to cover alcohol and pregnancy (giving capacity for debate through think pair and share), fetal alcohol syndrome and other carcinogens. A lesson based on the OCR-A SOW but can be used for others. The lesson introduces the assumptions of the Hardy Weinberg principle and introduces each of the 2 equations with examples. A gripping starter involving a young child and her successful battle with a large tumour is used to incite interest. The lesson then covers tumour formation, benign vs. malignant tumours and the causes of cancer. A differentiated question grid is then used to apply knowledge/conduct AFL. The treatment of cancer is then covered followed by a PP question. Video, gif images and standard pictures/news articles are used throughout to maintain interest and focus. This lesson covers the chemicals found in cigarettes, nicotine, carbon monoxide, smoking during pregnancy and carcinogens. A differentiated question grid and a PP question is then used to apply learning and to conduct AFL. The effects of smoking and cardiovascular disease are then discussed followed by a final PP question ahead of a reflective plenary. This lesson uses video, animation and news articles to incite interest throughout, making it particularly useful for visual learners.
A full, differentiated lesson based on the new AQA SOW (C5.7). A starter where students categorise items as acidic, alkaline or neutral is used to determine preconceived knowledge. Following this the pH range, acids, bases, and alkalis are discussed making use of examples. Students are prompted to take notes at key points using red font and a pen symbol. The release of H+ and OH- ions is also discussed ahead of methods in determining the pH of solutions. Knowledge is then applied to a differentiated question grid followed by peer/self-marking. A practical exercise (tailored to (C5.7) is then conducted where students prepare a pH curve by systematically adding acid to an alkaline solution using a burette, and monitoring the pH using a probe. Note, pipettes and universal indicator can be used as simple alternatives respectively. Stretch questions are included for the more able. The plenary is based on students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. A full lesson based on the new AQA (C5.2) SOW but could be used for others. This lesson has been prepared for a low to mid range ability. Displacement reactions are introduced through the starter and a short talk, students are prompted to take note of key text highlighted in red. There is then a short scaffolded activity where students must predict whether or not a reaction will occur by referring to the reactivity series. There is then a teacher led demonstration of such reactions, during which students must complete a table handout. Following a review of observations students are taught about carbon and hydrogens position within series during a short talk. Students then apply themselves to questions based on the content of the lesson. The plenary involves students reflecting upon their progress against the learning objectives. A full lesson based on the new AQA C5.1 SOW but can be used for others. The lesson starts off covering 7 key properties of metals, students are guided to categorise certain properties to metals or non-metals as you work through the slides. Oxidation/reduction in metal ores is then discussed ahead of the meaning and relevance of the reactivity series during a short talk, during which students are prompted to take notes of key points. A demonstration is then conducted where metals are reacted with water and then dilute acid (instructions included). During this demonstration students must determine the order of the reactivity series. The students will then independently attempt questions based on the demonstration they have observed. As a final plenary students will reflect on their progress against the learning objectives. All answers are included in the slides, with animation to facilitate questioning during self/peer correction. Timers are included to promote pace.
A full lesson based on the OCR-A SOW but could be used for others. This lesson was delivered to an A2 class but the content is quite simple making it suitable for AS alike. This lesson covers genetic and environmental factors within inheritance, using chlorosis in plants and body mass in animals as examples for the latter. The role of sexual reproduction in genetic variation is then studied, alongside homozygous and heterozygous inheritance and continuous/discontinuous variation. A range of activities (including 2 past paper questions) are used to apply knowledge/check for understanding at certain stages within the lesson. Timers are included to promote pace and all answers are included via animation. Self/peer marking follows each activity.

A full lesson based on the new AQA B1.1 SOW. The lesson covers converting units, light microscopes, electron microscopes, calculating magnification/image size, and magnification vs. resolution. A practical activity is included where students observe cheek cells and calculate their size - commercial slides can be used to save time or alternatively students can prepare their own. In the case of the latter, this content could fill two 1h lessons.
