American West GCSE Edexcel Literacy Mat

This literacy mat can be used to support students throughout their GCSE. It demonstrates the big picture of the American West and includes key people and events. It contains lots of key information and advice which will help develop independence. This could even be blown up for display. I know that many department budgets are restrained so I have included a black and white version too.

Use these sheets to help students understand how to write more effectively. These can be blown up for display or provided to students as A4 sheets. I provide students with access to laminated copies inside a literacy drawer. Some of my other literacy resources could be used to provide further support. In this lesson students research different methods of commemorating the slave trade and abolition before designing their own. A marketplace type activity develops student understanding and planning sheets are provided to support. Great for a last lesson within a scheme of work on the Slave Trade or for Black History Month. Writing PEE Paragraphs Menu

Useful guide to demonstrate some methods of paragraph structure and general tips to improve writing. I have used this from Year 6 through to GCSE. The menu idea makes it very easy to follow. I print these out and give them to students like a menu during extending writing. I have also blown these up to A3 for display. Comments are appreciated. Images are taken from Microsoft Office Clip-Art collections and used in line with MS policy.

Why did America 'lose' to the Viet Cong?

This lesson explores the reasons for America withdrawal by assessing the tactics used by both sides. Paired and group work takes up the bulk of the lesson. The main poster task can be interpreted in different ways but I use playmobil and props to allow students to get around the imposed word restriction. Examples of this task are shown in the powerpoint to help you visualise this! Comments are appreciated. :-)

How did people react to 9/11?

Continuing to build up the September 11th resources on TES, this lesson explores people's reactions. The lesson takes student&'s through the reactions of: the public, the president, the press and film makers. I use the first 10 minutes of the 2006 film 'World Trade Centre' during this lesson. Clips can be found on Youtube. This lesson also includes a timeline activity which could be used in isolation. Comments are appreciated! :-) (911, 9-11)

What made 9/11 so shocking?

There aren’t many September 11th lessons out there so here’s one! Now updated to include newer sliders and embedded clip. The main objective is for students to gauge how ‘complete’ a BBC news clip is. The PowerPoint includes task descriptions but please ask if you can’t follow the lesson. The bottom of the posters should be folded up so that you can reveal the answers! You choose the plenary. If you know of a short clip which was produced a little after the event that would be useful. Any comments are appreciated! :-) Images acquired through a search engine filtered to “labelled for reuse” BBC own the copyright to the clip in the link. I’ve been observed in this lesson and graded as outstanding so hopefully this works for you too. (911, 9-11)
