This is the first of two lessons in the bundle and introduces ideas of diffusing particles and the laws of diffusion. The lesson starts with the Jaws movie trailer to prompt thinking about how the shark was a able to smell it’s prey. There are demo and practical activity opportunities to demonstrate diffusion in gases and liquids whilst simultaneously introducing ideas about factors affecting diffusion rate. One of the videos looks at the effect of surface area on diffusion rate using agar jelly, but does not show the results. This could be an opportunity for students to try for themselves. The lesson concludes with an exam question.

This lesson provides opportunity for students to discover the main features of ferns and flowering plants (dicotyledons and monocotyledons) of the plant kingdom. Students start the lesson with a recall classification exam questions and review the 5 kingdoms. The main body of the lesson is for students to research the four main plant groups and then delve deeper in the specific characteristics of ferns and flowering plants. Students then identify differences between monocotyledons and dicotyledons. The lesson concludes with CIE specific exam questions. Mark scheme included. This lesson provides opportunity for students to discover the two main groups of the animal kingdom: Vertebrates and Invertebrates. Students are given a ‘Who am I’ task to research the features of vertebrates which concludes with a whole class review. Students then are given the main groups of invertebrates and need to research the features of arthropods. The lesson concludes with an assessment task with CIE specific exam questions which also draw on learning from the previous lesson on classification. Students can then peer assess. This could also be a suitable homework activity. Mark scheme included.

This lesson provides an opportunity to explore features of the 5 kingdoms of life and viruses. Students are provided with a 5 kingdom tree to glue into their books and they are given questions to answer about it. They are then provided with a cut and stick activity to identify organisms within each of the 5 kingdoms. The lesson ends with a 10 question quiz. Also included is a summary assessment sheet that can be used as a homework activity.

This lesson is the higher tier supplement in the Biological Molecules unit. The lesson starts with a recall of cell organelles linking into where the chromosomes are located. Students are then guided through the sequencing of chromosomes, genes, DNA and nucleotides. An additional video for consolidation. The final part of the lesson concludes with a base pairing task, identifying the mistake and labelling all components of DNA. The plenary revisits all core concepts with an on-line quiz. A summative assessment is also provided for all sections of the biological molecules unit. Mark scheme included.

This lesson introduces the idea of enzymes as biological catalysts and the differences between anabolic and catabolic reactions. The lesson starter promotes thinking about the film ‘The Fly’ and how flies digest their food externally using digestive enzymes. There are a series of YouTube videos and consolidation quizzes. The lesson concludes with a CLOZE task on the importance of enzymes in living organisms.

This lesson moves on to revisit the learning from the previous lesson on using a microscope to view onion and cheek cells. Students are introduced to a series of items that have been magnified and they are asked to identify each one. Students are then showed an animation from CellsAlive to rank magnified specimens in order of size. The lesson concludes with an introduction to the magnification formula, micrometers and unit conversions, together with some magnification calculations using unit conversion. Also included is a CIE specific assessment with the mark scheme.

This bundle provides all lessons required to complete the teaching of the Cambridge International Exam board. There are five lessons, graded learning objectives which facilitates the teaching of each lesson over several sessions. Sub-units 1 and 2 are single lessons whilst sub-unit 3 is split up into 3 separate lessons to deliver the main concepts of classification, and animal and plant classification. As the lessons progress, CIE exam questions are introduced to students, together with mark schemes. The whole bundle culminates with a CIE summative assessment on the whole unit.

This lesson starts by revisiting the microscope; the start task focuses students on a labelling task to recall microscope parts. The main body of the lesson, reviews plant and animal structure before introducing the concept of being able to view them under the microscope. Worksheets are provided as guidance on the procedure to extract cheek and onion cells. These sheets can be printed or displayed on the whiteboard. Students finish off by drawing labelled cell diagrams with a focus on scale and magnification - a preliminary to the next lesson which is about calculating maginification.

This lesson starts with recall of the 7 nutrients with the intention to lead students into why carbohydrates, proteins and lipids are referred to as macronutrients . Their structures are illustrated, along with chemical structure to allow students to discover the elements glucose, carbon and hydrogen, and then why they are called macro/organic molecules. Later proteins are identified as having nitrogen. Further, the structures of starch, cellulose and glycogen are also identified. The lesson concludes with a crossword plenary activity.

This lesson revisits the basic concepts of osmosis and then progresses to application of it’s principles in plant and animal cells. The lesson starter has a focus on explaining the results of an investigation. In the main body of the lesson, students discover the role of water in plants and the importance of water balance in the blood. Students learn about plasmolysis in plant cells, and crenation and lysis in blood cells. The lesson concludes with a choice of two plenary activities. The osmosis investigation in potato chips leads learners through the planning of a trustworthy investigation through to a thorough evaluation in terms of reliability, accuracy and precision. The lesson concludes with a plenary activity, comparing diffusion with osmosis.
