This first lesson starts with a recall from KS4 of the outline of the structures and roles of phloem and xylem. The lesson then progresses on to describe their distribution in roots, stems and leaves. The second lesson progresses onto identification of the vascular bundles on micrographs, to look at the structures of the xylem and phloem in detail and describe their internal structures to their function. This lesson continues from the previous one on kidney structure. The starter revisits kidney structure and moves onto the nephron structure. Finally the lesson looks at the importance of the Bowman’s capsule, glomerulus and the proximal convoluted tubule in ultrafiltration and selective reabsorption. This lesson starts with past iGCSE exam questions on homeostatic mechanisms for temperature control, blood glucose control and water control. The lesson then progresses to look at the importance of homeostasis in maintaining dynamic equilibrium. Feedback loops introduce the idea of negative feedback. There is a small section on positive feedback, which although is not on the CIE syllabus, is useful for students to understand the concept of the importance of negative feedback switching off.
